Okay, so this is a rather old story, but something today triggered the memory. This harkens back to when I was still a college student. It was break, and I was back home for a brief period. A friend of mine, A, was visiting when another longtime friend, B, called me. He had just broken up with his long term girlfriend, and needed to chill. So, A and I pick up B in my car, and we talk. It's already pretty late, and before long, we're really getting hungry. We live in an area that has crap for 24 hour shops, so I had to drive 20 minutes to the nearest all night WaWa, where we picked up various junk foods to tide us over and keep talking.
A and I are doing what we can to comfort B, and we basically get whatever he wants. The clerk at the checkout rings us up, and while I'm paying, the other guys head back to the car. The clerk gives me a look and says, "Wow, don't you guys have any lives? Talk about a waste of your parent's money."
I was shocked, then enraged. I shot him a glare of death and paid for the food. A and B didn't hear anything about it, and out of consideration for B and not wanting to make his night any worse, I bit my tongue and didn't make a scene.
Oh the things I wanted to say to that little prick. I don't care what he thought of us buying junk food at midnight. Heck, I know I seem like a pothead when I go into a convenience store at 3AM for what are essentially munchies, but what you THINK of a customer and what you SAY to a customer are two entirely different things. I wanted to call in his manager and file a formal complaint about his behavior, maybe see if I could get his ass fired, because insulting the customer as he is purchasing the goods that pay his wages strikes me as incredibly poor customer services (unless you happen to work in Dora's Coffee Shop from QC).
It's been years since that time, so unfortunately the bastard got away with it, but every so often I remember that and get so incensed. It serves as a crystal clear reminder why I should never just make a snap judgment on someone. If they are really worthy of derision, they will show it soon enough.
I like to think at some point he got what was coming to him, but there's a part of my that knows he probably keeps doing what he's doing, because he's probably the only person in that area willing to work third shift.
