  • car sighting: registration sticker vs inspection sticker

an old sighting for me... about 2 or 3 years old. some of the other threads here just made me think about it...

back then i had an odd living arrangement. My official residence was NY state, I had a NY licence & registration, even NY insurance. But I was living and working in VA. (sounds weird, but... yeah it was actually legal)

I talked to both the NY DMV and the VA State police, and... basically... I am allowed to get my car inspected in any state I want. The only rule was that if I had VA inspection stickers, I would have to obtain a temporary pass before entering NY & then get an official NY inspection done asap.

OK cool... I didn't want to drive to NY and back once a year just for that, so I always had it done locally.

I've only had a problem with this ONCE: Firestone Auto/tire on VA Beach. VA doesn't use registration stickers, just inspection stickers, while NY uses both. So when the guys inspected my car, they saw the Registration sticker was almost expired (about a month out) and scrape it off along with the old inspection sticker.

I didn't even notice it until I was leaving... I didn't care that my car failed inspection. I didn't even care that their "estimate" on parts was insane - cos I knew I'd get a better deal at the Sears just down the road.

What pissed me off was... they scraped my REGISTRATION sticker. And when I went back to complain, upset.... I even told them, "Without that sticker, my car can get towed!" But... I was told, "It's the law. We're not going to argue about with you."

About the only good thing was that I was able to take my old sticker - in a few pieces from the floor, and just hope it would be good enough until the new one came in. (It was already on order actually).

But... the car got fixed at Sears, at over 100 bucks cheaper than Firestone's estimate, and ... they didn't do inspections there, but they said "WTF? It's illegal to scrape a state registration sticker!" Likewise, when I went to Kimnach Ford for an inspection - like hell I'd go back to Firestone, even if I'd save 14 bucks - they said the same thing... "It's illegal to scrape a registration sticker."

Since then... I've shunned the firestone. And, before any inspection I verfied that they would leave my registration sticker alone. But it wasn't an issue then, cos everyone else apparently knew what the law really states.

I had a run in with Firestore ages ago in Washington state. Just bad people at the shop where I went. Avoided them since.

We don't have to deal with inspections in FL. The good part is that its one less thing I have to pay for / worry about. The bad part is that it scares me to think that cars on the road aren't safe.

Virginia is weird like that. By law they're supposed to scrape off all old stickers and issue you a new one. I remember when I moved from New Hampshire to Virginia they didn't scrape off my old inspection sticker. They just slapped the Virginia one on and left the New Hampshire one in it's place (this was at Williamsburg Chrysler Jeep Kia). I had to make sure to scrape the New Hampshire sticker off before I went to visit New Hampshire since I know the New Hampshire Staties would have had a field day with that one. I'm glad I'm in Vermont now and I don't have to worry about the Virginia thing anymore.

I totally understand the New York registration sticker thing as I grew up in New England and I see New Yorkers all the time. Common sense would have dictated that the tech should have asked as to whether or not the sticker was pertinent and left it alone if it was. I would have contacted the Virginia State Police over that one since they are in charge of monitoring inspection stations.
Suddenly, Vermont became the epicenter of the dystopia.
