  • Another one on the bus.

Boarding the bus at the subway station always means one thing: a mad rush for seats.
This particular bus had only two individual seats, and when I saw an empty one I made a bee-line for it, beating a woman out for it.
She gave me the "pfft" sound, looked me up and down and said, "Fucking teenagers."
To which I responded, "Teenagers who are faster than you."
She then proceeded to spend the rest of the trip scowling at me, which made me chuckled several times.
All this over a seat on a bus, when she even managed to get another seat in place of the individual one.

Note: I'm not a teenager, nor have I been for a few years, but according to most people I don't look a day over 17.
This woman was also not elderly, pregnant or disabled. If she was any of those things she could have had the seat no problem. But if you're able bodied but just happen to be slower than me then nuts to you, sucker.

Watch out, girl. Old age and treachery will beat out youth and exuberance any day.

I'd agree, except that when I was 9 months pregnant and taking the bus to work, I could *NEVER* get a seat, even when I had a special bus pass for disabled people (I had a lot of sciatic nerve trouble when I was pregnant).

That's awful. Back when I used to take the bus to work, I'd give up my seat to a pregnant or elderly person while all the men sat there. At the time, I was a female in my mid-20s.

I'm all for equality, but little touches of chivarly should not be completely dead.

I've told my two teenage boys (ages 19 and 17) that if I EVER catch them (or get wind of them) sitting somewhere on public transportation while a heavily pregnant or elderly person is forced to stand, I'll string them up my their ears.

That's because the majority of people on the bus (at least whenever I ride the bus) are self-absorbed jackasses. Most people posting to this site probably don't qualify for that label.

I know this because back when my knees were worse I walked with a cane in each hand. An older man took the last seat before I could get to it so I asked if I could please have the seat, as I was in a great deal of pain and it's hard for me to stand. His lovely response was No, you're young and pain builds character. It's good for you.

Later on I dropped one of my canes (as I had it under my arm while holding the pole to keep myself upright) and fell over when trying to pick it up. The old jackass actually chuckled out loud at the sight. I pondered bludgeoning him about the head with a cane since I'm sure the pain would have helped him to build some 'character'.

How about I build some "character" on your kneecaps with my cane! Inconsiderate bastard!!!

one of the things i love about here... on the trains and subways they have special seats for the elderly, disabled, pregnant, or with very small children. anyone can sit there, but they *have* to give up the seats if approached.

I would have accidentally stabbed one of his feet with the cane while struggling to pick it back up.

Exactly. I think the busses had signs at the front that those seats were for elderly/handicapped, but the bus driver didn't have the authority to move the rude assholes if one of the elderly needed the seat.

that's one thing I like about UTA, the drivers have the authority to kick anyone breaking rules off the bus... my understanding is that if someone refuses to leave when told to the drivers have the authority to stop the engine and call in for police to remove the person (trust me, they only have to threaten it, because the rest of the bus WILL take care of the person if we find out we have to wait for police, because most of people on the bus WILL be fired if they are late to work for any reason and the rest of us have shit to do).

We have those seats as well but whether or not someone is going to get up from them is another story.
I can't count how many times I've seen people pretend like they don't see the elderly person standing in front of them just so they could keep their seat.
I always want to offer mine but I typically sit at the back, which isn't an attractive option to someone who is elderly, disabled or very pregnant, mostly because in order to get where I sit you have to go up two steps.

I had issues when I tore out my PCL-full knee immobilizer-no one in the front seats would give up a seat and I couldn't sit normally in a regular seat so I had to sit sideways-with foot sicking out in the isle. I eventually had to resort to "fake" shreiking in pain to get idiots to stop walking into it every 5 seconds(yes it did hurt allot-and the doctors though I was "drug seeking" and refused to give me anything-I specifically requested non-narcotic-um hello total obliteration of a major knee ligament-very painful)
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes
