Good lord you all have it lucky. My wife gets hers washed, dryed, cut, higlighted and it costs $90-$120 before tip. Thankfully it's once a month with color every two months but still.

Eep. I almost died when my cut and color came to 85 bucks. I'm hoping when I go back in March, it'll be less to just touch up roots and trim 1/4 inch off the ends.

I wanted to go lighter, which started to turn into going more of a strawberry blonde. I usually had my Mom dye my hair, and she decided that, when doing my roots, to spread the rest of the dye through the rest of my hair.

Result? By the time I went to a pro(oddly enough, at the same place the OP occured), she counted 10 separate hair color layers. I nearly died at the cost. Mainly because of the bleaching they had to do closer to my head.

I only got it colored one more time.. to match my roots.

Matt - I feel your pain.

I have very dark nair naturally and keep it pretty light. It costs me about the same to keep up.

When I first got divorced, I had to decide between keeping my hair blonde or getting rid of my semi-monthly manicures, because I couldn't afford both.

The hair won by a land-slide.

I don't screw around with having my hair dyed either. I grew out of my phase of dying it burgundy and it was expensive having it professionally done.

The stuff in the box at the drugstore absolutely wrecks my hair as well.

The electronics specialist at my store has very close-cropped hair. He dyed it red a couple of times and must not have done it right because each time his scalp was bright red along with his hair.

The cheap-o places around here just spray your hair and snip for $12. No scalp massage, no lovely chat with a friendly hairdresser, no beautiful styling when it's done.

I go to a cheapo place (last time cost me $22 with tip - and I tip well). I don't get my hair washed, but I do have a friendly hairdresser who chats and remembers things we talked about previously (and I get my hair cut approximately every 2-3 months, at best), asks about my mom (she used to go there too), and blows out my hair in such a way that I can never quite duplicate the next day (dammit!). I've never bothered to look at what they charge for washing. I looooove having my hair washed, but usually I don't bother; my hair is pretty straight and fine so it does fine with good spraying. I don't do the walk-in thing there, though, since the few times I've tried it they've always been too busy. I just make an appointment with the same person every time (though I had another person there once and I was happy with her as well).

The place I went when I was in school was a cheapo place and actually did include washing, for like $15 or something like that (this was 10 years ago). They only charged an extra dollar if you wanted conditioner.

When I had my hair colored/highlighted, I didn't keep it up because it's so friggin expensive. Plus red fades faster than any other color. And the girl who was doing it moved away. I have done the semi-permanent home color thing, but it's so messy I'd usually just rather not.

And BSE, the stylists at the place I got my hair cut at once and have gone to get shampoo are always in a bad mood. I'll take my hairdresser and pay 5x what the cheapo places cost. But I'm glad that they work for you!

I add red to my med brown hair whenever I can, and it always comes out to like $75. But it's worth it, because it brings out my blue eyes

When my wife isn't up to cutting my hair, I use an old-fashioned barber. I throw in a tip... to bring the total up to a nice round $10.

And after reading everyone else's stories (and dollar amounts), I feel incredibly lucky.
