I'm at the checkout finishing up and bagging my groceries. In through the out door swoops a woman with a determined look about her. She approaches the closest checkout (mine) She brushes past me and stoops over to grab a good handful, maybe a dozen or so, of the heavy duty paper bags that are on a shelf. I stare, mouth agape, as she turns back toward the exit.
I'm a pretty conscientious bag reuser and this woman has just wasted a month's worth of my effort, PLUS she didn't buy anything. She gets three steps and two of those little ladies every grocery store seems to have (Been there forever, know everything and everybody, and hyper-efficient to boot
) converge on her.
Cool Grocery Lady 1: "Hi there! How many bags are you getting today?"
EW: "Uh. I don't know, I don't need them for groceries, I have a project to do."
Cool Grocery Lady 2 (to CGL1) "I've got it Madge."
CGL2 to EW: "I can ring those up for you over at the service counter ma'am."
EW: "What? Huh? How much are they?"
CGL2: "Dime a piece." Turns and heads toward service desk but looks over shoulder toward EW.
EW: "Well! I had no idea you would charge me!" Tosses bags on end of checkout and storms off empty handed.
I chuckle and put the bags back under the counter and head out the door, pausing long enough to tell "Madge" thanks for keeping my grocery bill under control
