    Question for those who have to deal with lottery SC's

    Just wondering if this phenomenon is common, and if so, you have my undying respect. Ugh.

    Yesterday morning I was running a little late for work, but I was REALLY tired, so I stopped in the gas station next to my office for some coffee and a red bull. I got up to the counter and there was a guy in front of me with about 5 items, and was frantically scratching some lottery tickets as she rung him up. Apparently he won 10.00 on one of them.

    He actually HANDED them back to her as she was ringing him up and demanded more. She asked what kind and he asked what dollar scratch offs she had!!! So she proceeds to tell him all the different kinds while he ponders, and while I'm standing there with my coffee and red bull, just wanting to pay and get the hell out of there so I can go to work.

    I stood there fuming while he finally picked some more scratch offs and paid for his items. I was wondering if he was going to do it again and was prepared to seriously LOSE MY SHIT on him if he did.

    Thankfully, he took his stuff with the tickets and left with them.

    The funny/disturbing thing about the whole thing was the cashier's reaction. She was so nonchalant about the whole thing, which leads me to believe this sort of behavior is commonplace.

    BTW, I was 3 minutes late for work. Which, coincidentally, is approximately the amount of time I wasted standing behind this idiot.

    So, do these lottery idiots do that alot? Do people in line ever get really pissed off at the delay it causes?

    Most "lotto whores" (as I used to call them and still do) really don't care what is going on around them or how long they are taking or who is being inconvenienced.

    Don't get me wrong, someone just buying a Powerball or a random ticket shouldn't be mixed into this equation as being a bother or a pain......I'm talking about the people who come into the stores with a handfull of scratch offs and stand there tapping their feet as the clerk tries to check them all.....and they spend FOREVER trying to decide what they want........

      I've known of shops who had rules that you weren't allowed to do any lotter-related anything at the counter. You had to step away and do your scratching or filling in elsewhere.

            The stuff that you scratch off is latex. At my mother's store, we used to have a parttimer that was allergic to latex, so we required that you go to a different counter to scratch them (kiosk provided by the lotto commission). A couple months ago they brought us a WONDERFUL new toy....self-check for tickets (all kinds - scratchers and games!)....We require that you check your own, and you must get back in line at the end of the line to redeem them. We have only one till and people buying a dollar scratcher insisting on hogging the counter was VERY annoying.

              Not to be the devil's advocate, but from the cashiers point of view it's not really her fault that you're running late and you standing there and looking all pissed off at a customer she doesn't have a problem with isn't going to help rush things along. :/

                It is the cashier's job to keep the line moving after a transaction. Once the first ticket sale was done, they should have moved on to the next customer and not waited for the first to finish scratching.

                  The kiosk in my mall (also happens to be a dealer of bongs, crack pipes, capsicum spray and fancy lighters) does not stand anyone doing it at the counter, as their are generally lines and their is very clear signs up all around to buy your products, check your change and move over to the stands they have provided for you to stand and scratch your tickets.

                  Thankfully lottery scratch cards in this particular state are only sold at Lotto Kiosks, newsagents (again, will be told to move to the other counters they have dedicated for filling out lottery tickets) and train station kiosks (The only place ive actually found lotto whores to be a problem.. when milling around asking what tickets they have, how much they cost, etc even when they're right in front of them).

                    My wife worked in a C-store a few years ago. And there was a woman who would come in and play $600 worth of scratchers all the time.

                    She'd buy like $25 worth, then cash in the winnings on more, and then just keep doing it. She often left with nothing. Even if she won $500 on a ticket she'd apparently cash it in on a bunch of the more expensive tickets. She'd be in there for hours standing to the side of the counter.

                      The conversations about what tickets to get would be commonplace though everyone's comments about making the people move out of the way to scratch them off are also true. He shouldn't have been standing there while he scratched them off, nor should the cashier let him.

                          ummm...... bongs and crack pipes buying is so prevalent that it causes lines, which can be slowed down by scratchers??? :P

                            Um, sorry if I gave the wrong impression, but I wasn't upset with the cashier AT ALL. I was merely pointing out that she was very nonchalant about it, which led me to believe that this was totally commonplace with the lottery SC's.

                            Its been my experience that usually when a cashier has a SC, when they leave they'll roll their eyes or sigh loudly, but this one didnt, which made me feel even sorrier for her that this is obviously a par-for-the-course thing.

                              Here we have little machines that check the tickets for you.
                              You scan the barcode on the ticket and if you lose it gives you a little message, and if you win it shouts, "WINNER, WINNER, GAGNER, GAGNER!"
                              It forces people to stand out of line and do things their damn selves.

                              I assume this machine works for both scratch offs and the type of tickets that require you to pick numbers, like Lotto 649 and the like.
