I can hear the buzzing that a fluorescent light makes when it's getting ready to burn out when nobody else can hear it.
Incandescent (regular) bulbs make a similar high-pitched whine just before they go. And there used to be a store in one of the malls that I could not go into because it was physically painful to me, hearing the lights they used.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

I don't what the hell it is, but there is something in the apartment complex next door that makes a horrendous high-pitched squeak. It definitely sounds electronic and is intermittent. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the emergency system. Luckily, it's not all the time. Yesterday, though, when I was walking over to Sunflower, it was doing its squeak thing and it was bad enough to make me wince everytime (I can hear until I'm almost across the street.).

What is it about those barely-heard sounds that are so horrendous?

There are some lighting-related buzzes that drive me crazy.

And any bass sound that I can feel more than I can actually hear will give me a headache within moments. We actually called security on a neighbor with too much flipping bass yesterday because the whole apartment was thumping. (thankfully, we have a car on sight at all times, and it takes about 5 minutes for the guy to reach any other part of the complex)
