  • Guess he really needed some smokes

My son and I were in the mood for a snack earlier, so we decided to head over to Sheetz. For anyone who doesn't know, it's a convenience store that's also sort of a fast food place. Actually, their food is a step above fast food, but I digress...

As soon as we got in, we saw a guy at the counter arguing with the manager over a coupon for cigarettes that he wanted to use, but the manager said he could not. I didn't catch all of it, but it sounded like he had to buy something to use it, but I didn't see him with any items, so maybe he wanted to use it without buying anything else. Or maybe it was for a pack and he wanted to use it for a cartoon, because I heard bits and pieces about packs vs. cartons, I don't know...

Either way, he was getting really loud and beligerent about it, to the point where the guys working the food area were standing at attention, apparently ready to jump in and/or call the cops if the guy got physical. He didn't get to threaten to "take his business elsewhere." The manager suggested it herself.

He didn't leave, but stood there and argue some more. When he let a string of obscenties fly, the manager decided she'd had enough, and told him to "Get out. Now." After he left, the other guys started cracking jokes about how he must have been nicking really bad, and that maybe he should "go smoke some cigarettes that we won't sell him."

For some reason, he hung around in the parking lot for awhile, because we saw him leaving after we got our food and started heading out to the car. If the age laws went by mental age, he would have been way too young to smoke anyway.

One thing I learned working at the gas station, and being a smoker myself.....Nick fits are real. Very real.

I've never thrown a temper tantrum at a gas station, but if I can't smoke, I will throw a fit and go from sweet to homocidal within minutes.

But as far as SCs having nick fits, yes. VERY real. If you dare come between a customer and their smokey treats, you're in for a bad day.

Maybe, but I would think that if you needed it that bad, and found out you couldn't use your coupon for whatever reason, you would have paid the full price instead of standing there arguing and not having your smokes.

Despite the jokes that the other employees made, I don't think he was nicking. I think he was simply an asshole.

Maybe he had a coupon for a few dollars off a carton, and wanted to use it on a single pack. I had that happen a lot at my store. (No, you can't use this $4.00 Off A Carton coupon for 1 pack of $3.75 smokes...)

Because sometimes they don't have the full price to pay for 'em.

I've known some serious smokers who also were either hopeless with finances (the case of one in particular), or they just don't make enough to support their habit (I've known a lot of these).

I've been in that situation, where I had a hard time getting smokes(either a coupon wouldn't work or I had to walk frickin three miles to the nearest open store). Even still, I don't understand why people gotta be such douchewaffles about it. If you don't have the money, you don't get smokes. If you don't have your ID, you don't get smokes(ugh, this happened to me once when I had to walk. I walked back to my house, then out again. Rules is rules, yo.).

I miss Sheetz so hard. I don't think we have any in NY, let alone WNY. Anytime I visit people in PA or VA, I so hit them up for a bag of fries. Best breakfast sammies ever.
