  • Best Buy had to Price Match itself

Bought a new TV/DVD combo at Best Buy today. Buying the TV, a wall mount and a warranty plan, we paid (3 different ways - Gift Card, $200 cash & the rest on BB credit card close to $1,000).

We get to the car, relaxing, excited that we have a new TV/DVD player and hubs asks to see the receipt. I hand it to him, and he pauses. We were charged $699.99 for the tv. On the ticket in front of the TV, it said the price was $549.99. $150 difference! I went back inside just to make sure our rememberies were correct (they were).

I went back to the car and sent hubs in (he had receipt and the BB credit card on him). Went to the same sales person who helped us before. He took hubs to Customer Service. Told the guy there to do a price match and the guy was like, we're pricing which company and the sales person said "Us. Best Buy." Turns out the $549.99 sale tag was for last week and no one bothered to take down the sign. Whew. So we saved $157.50 (that includes the tax that had been charged on our purchase). Whew. Sometimes it pays to just simply read the receipt.

Opposite end of the spectrum, went to Target one time because I needed jeans and on their webpage they had them on sale. In store did not have the sale price, was told by the manager they don't price match Target.com because "it's a different company".

It is. Just like www.walmart.com and WalMart are governed by two different companies.

I'm fairly certain that there will be a disclaimer on both that says something along the lines of "Prices may vary by location" or "price only valid on-line" or some such.

            What Broomjockey said.

Wal-Mart's price match policy states (last I checked) that they don't match online offers, including their own website's. Target's probably similar.

Well, then, if I want the sale price online, I'll have to buy it online then. As for Best Buy, I just found it amusing. Hubs said the guy who had to do the price matching stuff, just looked at the sales guy. I wonder if they've taken down last week's sale tags.

Barnes & Noble is the same way. But they don't price match anyway. But the website and the store are technically separate, even though all the stock comes from the same place...

It is amusing. Very much a wtf moment for the price matching guy

It's almost happened to me. I was shopping for a TV, and found a pretty good deal, but only because the sale tags were almost a week out of date. I pointed it out to the sales guy, and he said they'd honour them for me since I saw them. I didn't manage it though, because I couldn't quite swing it

Bummer that happened to me a couple times. A great deal that seemed to be there just for me...and money to get the amazing deal.

Yeah, what the others said about online vs in store matching.

The vast majority of places will not price match online only offers as online stores don't have any of the front end expenses that brick and mortar stores have to deal with.

                        Good Spotting.
Happens very often for us, and We've seen customers save a lot of money due to someone in the store not finding the ticket (or it been printed on the wrong ticket shell, we have "Advertised" Ticket shells which only go up when we have our weekly ad in the paper or our brochure) and removing it, and we honour it no problems.

Our website all has the same price as in store (more designed for people in rural areas to order from if they're many hundreds of miles away from a store) except for a couple of offers they have occasionally, so theirs no problems with that. We get more problems with the fact that the website doesn't specify that an item is Online-Only, and they bring in the printout and complain when we tell them we don't stock that here unless we order it in..

Oh god...this story reminded me of one of the darkest days of work I've had thus far...I put signs up for advertisements and sales.

Well, when I used to work in electronics, we had a protron television that was regular like $1299 and it went on a special sale to like 799.

Except it was incorrect, as I later found out. I had scanned the product and it was coming up that price. Okay so it's been that price before so I created the sign for it and stuck it up there.

Next day I come in and I went to check that. Okay, no one was around. I scan it and it had gone back to regular price! So I take down the sign.

Ten minutes later a man comes in and starts flipping out. "Where's the sign?! It was fricking' 799 fifteen minutes ago! *anger*"

Me, I thought I was screwed. There was no way the store could take that big of a hit without some heads rolling. I flipped out, 'cause I never have made that sort of mistake...electronics guys tried vainly to fight to get the guy to not want the price, since it was an error and we have the right to change it without notice, etc.

Store manager got involved. Oh god, it was just awful...

I didn't mean to bring back such bad memories for you! Please forgive me!

I just wanted to point out to people that they need to read their receipts so they know what they're paying.

                              Sorta related:

Went to Target to buy a queen-sized comforter and saw it was on the shelf $69.99. When they scanned it up front, it said $99.99. We told them the price it said, so the guy just edited it and sold it to us for $69.99. I always wondered if he got in trouble, as he didn't ask anyone to verify.
