  • This is a school zone...

One of the routes in the office delivers to a elementary school, middle school, high school, and then to the administration building. In this area the speed limit goes to 15 as the HS kids don't seem to realize that walking out in front of a moving vehicle might get them hurt.

Well it's common for people to still speed through at 40 to 45 and yet...the cops have never caught them. Well today was "Dare day" and the cops not only got one or even two but it was just on the radio that cops were able to pull over close to 40 vehicles.

    HA! Take that.

What gets me all giddy tho is one of the vehicles pulled over was a DHL van. Sucks to be them I know the UPS guy and the carrier on that route got a good snicker at watching the DHL guy get a ticket.

When I was in high school we'd have at least three or four people a day get pulled. We had a cop that just sat in the parking lot all day and waited.

Well yeah DHL is going to get pulled over. They are pretty much told to drive like a bat out of hell.

You know...now that I think of it...I've never seen one of those familiar yellow vans EVER come close to obeying speed limits (although cops here in Miami do tend to allow drivers a 5-15mph leeway, depending on the cop). They must have some killer deadlines.

That explains the local DHL driver then. Dude blew past me one day by passing on the right in the break down lane. I was speeding by about 10 mph at the time and he was going a good 20 - 30 mph faster than I was. A mile down the road I watched him blow through a red light, too. I just assumed he was suicidal.

All of the DHL drivers I've seen on the road have been pretty awful, too.

The UPS and FedEx drivers, however, seem to be quite decent.

Locally, most of the UPS and FedEx drivers have box trucks. These simply aren't designed for high speeds, not to mention they're heavier than a regular cargo van. As such, it's no wonder why they drive slowly

Getting back on topic...many school zones locally *do* have cops sitting nearby. They just *love* nailing people going 40mph in a 15mph school zone.

I live near an elementary school. What annoys the hell out of me, are parents who drop their kids off...and then literally lay rubber out of the parking lot. Never mind that there are *other kids* who walk along the street to school! I mean, is getting that coffee down at Sheetz *really* worth possibly killing someone over it?

No matter how much we bitch about speeders (the street I live on, along with the rest of the borough, is 25mph), the cops don't want to do anything. However, you exceed the speed limit (35 or 40) by less than 5mph on one of the main drags, they'll pull you over in a heartbeat

At the high school in my home town one of the students got killed. She and a friend were standing on the corner, on the sidewalk, waiting for traffic to clear. In other words, doing what they should have been doing. A driver coming across the road towards them blew the stop sign, and pulled out in front of another car (oncoming traffic doesn't stop). The oncoming car t-boned them, and pushed the car into the girls.
Finally, after 15+ years of people predicting something bad happening with the cars and students they did something. They put in warning lights to slow traffic. I'm still waiting for something else bad to happen.

As a learner driver...I simply can't understand HOW people can do that. There are signs everywhere, at least in England...and one knows when one's going too fast, even in an AA car.

Second - I've seen a few DHL trucks and they all kept to the limits around Winchester. Different management for Brit? ...And why are they told to go fast?

Common occurrence here in Australia as well.
Big signs at the start of each Primary (and some) High schools advising the driver that it goes down to 40km/h, the hours that this operates and the days. Yet people still do over the regular speed limit of 50km/h in most zones, which is ridiculous for obvious reasons that children are crossing, and that their is generally crosswalk attendants at most areas.

When I went to Primary School the cops generally pulled up just before the crosswalk attendant, stayed their the whole time. Most of the time they pulled over PARENTS doing 10, 20, sometimes 40 over the speed limit. They also often pulled over Buses as well speeding to make time during the peak morning period.

A friend of mine's a truck driver, he says the route is planned and they have to get round it and back to base in time, partly because they don't get paid overtime, partly the next shift needs the truck, partly they'll have contracts to get certain goods to certain places at particular times, partly legally they can only drive for a certain number of hours at a time, so have to get everything done before they are forced to rest..

So if whoever organised the route forgot about rushhour traffic/onewaystreets or anything else that can delay the drivers.. well, they go fast.
