Actually, believe it or not, the innards of an etch-a-sketch is pure ground aluminum, and the iron oxide is rust. when burned together in controlled amounts, it creates a compound known as Thermite, which burns at upwards of (if I remember correctly) 4000 degrees F. It's quite a well known trick, but it's fun none the less.
