This is a rare case where I would consider her apology to be pretty much worthless.

Unless she was willing to offer up her apology regardless of who you turn out to be it's nothing more than an attempt to save face for her acting like an ass.

She treated you badly when she thought you were beneath her. She doesn't feel bad about that, only that she insulted someone she considers her "equal" by treating them like a serf.

Ptah on her and her kind.

After telling one lady that I didn't work at K-Mart, she said "Oh, excuse me! It's just that you looked so professional."
Well, theres a clue that you don't work at K-Mart.

One of our major supermarket chains employees uniform is black dress pants, white shirt and tie with black vest which has logo and name badge. Once is was in one of their store over the summer wearing sandals, khaki shorts and a t-shirt...

        SC: sir, wher is <item>
Me: I don;t work her, but their is an employee on the next aise
SC: So you won't help me?
Me: I said I don't work here so i wouldn know exactly to tell you where it is but the...
SC: Stop lying. You work her, your useless, i'm going to get you fired, get me your manager

I just walk away as the SC screamed at me. I saw him taking to manager as I checked out. I fer sorry for that manager.
I'm all for helping people out, it has happened to me in other stores also but if someone thinks you are lying, then its time to be rude, (which I absolutely hate). My three responses are as follows:

        1. In the words of the Master George Carlin "EAT ME!!!"

        2. Go piss up a rope.

        3. Go Fk yourself or I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to go have sex with yourself.

True, but I decided to be gracious about it. I could have made an issue of it, but I was at a wedding and having too much fun to be bothered by it.

If I did work there, what did she think, that I was stocking toddlers on a shelf somewhere?
What department do toddlers go in, anyway?

              Infants, of course.

To stave off the demands on my time when not on the clock at Wal-Mart, I made sure to take off my vest and badge so I wasn't obviously an employee. I still got occasional requests for help, but I merely replied that I was on my break and unable to help, and if they went to such-and-such nearby part of the store, they could find an associate who was still clocked-in who could assist. I don't recall any real SCs in that department, especially since I could still point people in the general direction of an item, so I must not have had too many people arguing with me. Of course, the remove-the-vest trick doesn't really work anymore now that they've switched to navy blue shirts and khaki-colored pants.

As for places I didn't work at at the time....

Was in a different Wal-Mart once in jeans and a t-shirt (so not dress code), with my blue jacket tied around my waist and a red fleece vest (minus "How May I Help You?" on the back and minus name badge on the front), some lady in Electronics asked me for help finding some doodad. She was pretty understanding when I explained that I didn't work there, though she still gave me a semi-disbelieving look. Some people just don't pay attention to dress codes.

And then there's Hubby. He has the uncanny knack for accidentally wearing his red button-up shirt on our rare excursions to Target (dress code is red shirt and khakis, if I recall). I've lost count of the number of times he's been asked for assistance by other customers.

The uniform thing.... doesn't work at my job.

Dress code: white collared shirt w/ store supplied ugly red vest (not just my opinion, I get a good laugh out of people when I use that descriptor as part of the directions to find the clocked in guy) or purchased red, red w/ black sleeves, or teal polo, with arcade's governing company's logo on it. Black pants/jeans. Black shoes.

What I wear while not clocked in, during the winter: blue jeans with hole torn in rear pocket, random geeky t-shirt (and I have a lot of them), laptop bag over shoulder. Carrying winter coat over shoulder.

during the summer: geeky t-shirt, black shoes (because I <3 my black Chuck Taylors), green plaid... kilt.

And yet they always come to me *before* the guy who is working, in uniform, behind the redemption counter. Yes, they come to ask the guy who is wearing a kilt, which is so far against dress code it isn't funny, before the guy who is behind the counter, or even better, walked toward them when he saw them having trouble with a game.

I got asked for help while shopping at my store on a day off. Even though I was wearing shorts, sandals and some random t-shirt.

I was a nice guy. I showed her where the item was. It was only a few steps away.

I suppose it's possible the person recognized me as an employee since I'm full time and thus working there more often than the average employee.

The last time someone accused me of lying about not working there, I challenged him to get a manager to fire me. He backed down pretty quickly.

Also one time I was shopping while wearing a shirt that said "NO I DON'T WORK HERE" (they date from the original owner of this site actually, he had them on a Cafe Press store). Some random idiot said "Excuse me, do you... oh sorry!"

Yeah. CS has gone through a few managerial changes and several crashes.

But no matter what happens to it, it just keeps coming back.

Oh, I just assumed it was always the same person/people! I first found it years ago -- probably under different management.

Ever since Wal-mart decided to change their uniforms to blue shirt and khaki pants, I've been plagued with "do you work here?" questions if I go to Wally World after work. My work attire is a black polo shirt and khakis. I could see where people might mistake my black shirt for a dark blue one or something, as I've done it.

I've had customers ask me for help and other employees treat me like a co-worker. The customers I help if they are nice about it. One lady asked me to help her get some milk down from the top shelf. I did so. A few customers ask me where such and such is. If I know the answer, I tell them. If not, I tell them "sorry I don't work here. Black shirt, not blue."

I once asked an employee for help getting a heavy object into a cart. (I was buying one of those tall bookcases) He told me to go get "dan in paint" to help me. As I was walking away, he asked me what department I was in and I told him I didn't work here. So he apologized and helped me out. Hmmm...I guess that shows how much he cares about his other co-workers. Aren't these people at Wal-mart supposed to wear name tags? I swear, half of them, I never see with nametags. Maybe that's why I'm always being asked.

Other places I get asked are Winn-Dixie, I guess because of the polo and khaki attire too.

Doesn't work at mine either. Ironically the SM and AM are the worst offenders for this, but most of the time it will still be Smart-Casual regardless, so its okay. This is where the lanyard seems to help mind you, especially if I've gone in as I have before on emergency call (Was in the city earlier in the day, in my full goth garb, which I bring out occasionally if I'm in the mood), I just threw the lanyard on, kept everything else the same and nobody reacted in a strange way at all.

I think a lot of it could just be recognition as well if they've come into the store before.. the days I go in out of dress code I get just as many do you work heres as I would if I was in it.

Well, many hacks, but the site was set up by Mr Slugger many moons ago and I took over around Christmas of 2006 (or was it 2005?), if memory serves. I don't believe there were any other owners?

I've got some time off next week and intend to get some work done on the site. Cafepress is a likely option for me for some things. I have other irons in the fire, but yet again there has been a request for people to offer overtime in picking today.
