  • Put some socks on before you try on those shoes!

I just remembered this gem from about twenty years ago. Back around 1985, Converse made a comeback with their basketball high-top shoes. They were very popular due to the various colors available. In any case, my mom took me to the local Foot Locker, and there was this man there, about thirty years of age, trying on a pair of docksiders. This guy tried on at least three pair, and we noticed he was not wearing any socks! On top of that, the odor was so atrocious from this guy's feet that we had to move elsewhere for me to try my shoes on. It was so horrible, not only because of the smell, but also because he had tried on three pair of those shoes, and decided he didn't want them. Now, some poor soul was going to later on stick their feet in these shoes after this man's nasty feet had been in them.

I do think that now, shoe stores have learned a lesson from this. I took my daughter for shoes, and I had forgotten to put socks on her, or bring some along. She was wearing Crocs. Now, they have little disposable stockings, similar to pantyhose, that you can use for this. Good thing.

In my store, those disposable little socks always end up getting ganked by the cleaning people.

They put them over the toes of their shoes and use them to get rid of scuff marks.

Sounds like something that needs to be hidden away at night. Probably another reason the cost of shoes is going up.

Man, as someone who got dragged shoe shopping by my mom, my mostly female friends, and now my wife I have come to the conclusion that 95% of females try shoes on barefoot and that box of foot sox is mainly ornamental like the towel that hangs above your toilet.

That's just disgusting. It seems like the belief is the men are the ones who have atrocious, nasty, smelly feet, and the women do not, because they get pedicures, have their nails painted, etc. However, I have also noticed, especially in the summer, many children who try on sneakers barefoot because they're wearing flip flops or sandals. Maybe this is not so bad as their feet were not inside another shoe, sweating and emitting foot odors. Still, if I'm going out to try on shoes, I will be wearing socks to put a border between the shoe and whoever's foot fungus was inside them prior to me.
