So the subway station closest to my house is fully wheelchair accessible with an elevator from the upstairs bus platform to the downstairs subway platform.

Tonight a woman in a wheelchair asked a man standing next to the elevator if he could please push the button for her, as she could not reach.

    Two things:
    1. I didn't realise what she was asking him until afterwards because I was standing a little too far away.
    2. This woman had a disability that has probably had her in a wheelchair since childhood and will obviously have her in one for the rest of her life.

What does this man do when she asks him to push the button?

    ADAMANTLY shakes his head no.

    WTF!?

    That's a level of asshollery I can't even comprehend.

Another man walked over and pushed the button for her (which is when I realised what she asked the first man) and a woman cursed out the man who refused to help the wheelchair bound woman.
Exactly what she was saying I couldn't hear, but she wasn't speaking under her breath, that's for damn sure.

Honestly, what kind of person does that?
It's not like he didn't speak English and couldn't understand her, because he was pacing around earlier on his cell phone speaking in perfect English.

    Fucking asshole.

Perhaps he didn't hear her or thought she said something else???

From the description, she's at the doors to get on the elevator and he's next to the button, so he couldn't have been more than 3 feet from her. No way he couldn't hear her ask. I'm in agreement, what a fucking asshole.

If public opinion doesn't make him change his ways, I wonder what karma has in store for him.

That's absolutely appalling. I cannot count the number of times I have assisted someone like this who really needed help, like holding open a door, moving aside to give one like this some room, etc.

Then again, I have had others in this situation who have actually become angry because they're sick of people feeling sorry for them.

This is really appalling, but it also smells like severe mental defect. Perhaps irrational fear rather than just sheer suckiness.

I am beginning to think, no wait I *know* I must have been raised in either a time-warp or an alternate reality.

Had this numbnuts been raised by my family, he would comply with any reasonable request, especially if the word "please" was in the request- wheelchair or not. Why? because that's how reasonable people behave. And if not my mom, then my church was very firm on the do right by others thing.

I agree about karma. Pity I can't watch (I love a good revenge story).

That makes me think of one time where the button at the bottom of the elivator was broken and I ran up to the top and told the operator to open the door. The woman was surprised that someone had done that.
