  • Coldstone Calamity

I know I've been a bit absent, but here's a Sighting from this past weekend, as my new job currently has me hanging out in my cube on the computer all day, trying to get set up to start actually providing training.

Went to the outlet mall with mom on Saturday, had an amazing shopping trip, including buying a record number of pairs of pants (4 in one day! woot!). After a bunch of shopping, we decided that ice cream was in order, and headed to Coldstone. Yum.

When we got there, there were maybe 8 people ahead of us in line, with two employees behind the counter, 1 male, 1 female, both high school aged. While we stood in line, it built up behind us, until it was out the door, and there were children running about screaming for ice cream. And all the while, the employees moved at a glacial and very distracted pace.

The female employee just seemed distracted as she wandered about, and constantly had to ask her customers again what she was making, then again what they had ordered so she could plug in their order so they could pay.

The male employee kept pulling out his cell phone, and occasionally wandering into the back room for minutes at a time, for no apparent reason. He also seemed to forget who he was serving, and at one point, even forgot to bring customers their shakes after they paid, and tried to usher them out of the store, until they reminded him.

Also during that time, 2 other female employees wandered in and out, not doing anything but distracting the already distracted workers from the half-assed job they were doing of serving. In addition, at multiple times during our wait, they all wandered into the back room, leaving the entire store wide open under no supervision, leading mom and I to wonder aloud how easy it would be for someone to take some drinks, or even an ice cream cake out of the fridge and take off without paying.

All in all, it took nearly a half hour for those 8 customers to be served, while mom and I debated attempting to wade through the crowd to get out and get to Starbucks. And when we were finally served, it was with no smile, no polite words, just a "whaddya want?"

By the time mom and I had settled on a bench, finished our ice cream, planned our next stops, and gotten rid of our trash, some of the people who queued up while we were waiting to be served still had not been served.

Oh, and I did go to Coldstone's website and submit a complaint, including the store #, time and date, with details of the issue. I felt bad, but it was just unbelievable how little they seemed to care about actually doing their damn job in any type of timely or polite manner.

Wow...and Coldstone will be really sad to hear it because their places are usually so awesome & fast for often being busy! I am glad you wrote them.

Gonna have to disagree with you there. I worked retail and fast food as a highschooler, and I was the hardest worker they had. I came in on my days off (even ones I had scheduled off) because someone else would call in sick. I'd stay for double shifts, even stayed and finished a manager's shift when she had to go home. (fell off a ladder, couldn't walk without severe pain).

This was last year... it's just the kids, not all highschoolers.

With that said, holy frikkin coldstone, batman! You should come to the one next to my house. Always at least 4 people working, and they're always bright and smiley, always get exactly what you want (and if you go near closing, they usually put more amounts of mixins than usual, cuz they don't wanna clean it all up. ^_^)

It's not just the high-schoolers these days. It's lots of people in all kinds of different jobs. There's a lot of apathy going around. I've seen it in fast food, big box stores, mom-and-pops (that was a surprise), restaurants, etc.

It seems like a _lot_ of people have just stopped caring about doing good work and just do good enough work not to get fired.

i think we have coldstone here ... tho being american it'll be quarantined first (combination of health code issues and trying to encourage people to buy japanese first)

but you're guaranteed to have awesome service.
hey it's japan. i have yet to see any store here with sucky service.

Maybe they had the attitude of "I'm paid to show up, but I'm not paid to care".

                      No supervisor, either?

truthfully, I take offense at this statement. Not because it's wrong, but because it's a MASSIVE generalization. I'm in high school, my friends are in high school, we all have jobs and work our asses off. In truth, I see many more lazy middle aged people than I see lazy high schoolers.

Why should you feel bad? They're paid to do a job they weren't doing. It's too bad there wasn't a way for you to notify the owner or manager directly before contacting corporate, but that's the way it was set up.

BTW, I made a complaint to McDonald's corporate. They responded within two days, but the store I complained about was franchised. The store never got back to me, in fact, that was one of the questions that was asked by McDonald's on a follow-up email a few days later. Obviously, that McDonald's doesn't care about customers in the first place, and isn't worried about complaints in the second place. Stupid is as stupid does.

I have to chime in to defend the High School kids. To receive their High School diplomas, students here have to perform a certain number of community service hours. Some have figured out that working off those hours as a museum volunteer is a lot more pleasant than working in a soup kitchen.

That said, the students we get are uniformly bright, energetic and cheerful. They're a joy to work with.

Of course, doing a library inventory is loads better than standing behind a counter for minimum wage but most of the young people I see doing that are also bright, hard workers.

That answers the question I was going to ask: Why would anyone put themselves through such hell and misery for ice cream? I would have said "Screw this" and left.
