WHAT?! There's another Odd Thomas book coming out soon!! /booklust
started a new thread for it.

but seriously, if the guy was THAT keen to get the book early he could have pre-ordered it. then he could have it shipped to him or something

He asked what would and I told him he would have to pay my salary until I am 62 and can retire,
ironically i DID hear about something similar, but couldn't find any web-linkage to back it up. story i heard was that gene simmons requested the clerk save him an xbox 360 so he didn't have to wait in line, but mostly cos he figured his presence might make for an even worse crowd. the clerk agreed and the next day gene picked up the item from the back...only to find out the clerk had been fired because of it. so he paid the clerk one years salary to make up for the loss of his job.

Selling a book before its release date can mean BIG penalties for the store. One story that hit the news around here was a local store (children's stuff - books were only a small part of their lineup) that put the latest (#4 or #5 - it was a while ago) Harry Potter on the shelves before the release date, and were threatened with the publisher cutting them off (all titles, not just the latest HP) if they didn't take it down. When that didn't get them to comply (as I said, books were only a small part of their lineup), the publisher's representative came to the store and carted off every copy.

One of my friends works at a privately-owned bookstore (mostly used books, but some new) and they sold her a copy of the new Stephanie Meyer book (The Host--enjoyed it a lot) the night before it was due to be released. She'd already read it during her breaks at work, so I got to borrow it. Made some of my net friends insanely jealous.

It's NEVER anything I'd ask for, but cool if it happens.

Do you reckon we could come up with a bingo card with certain buzz words, enter them onto the site and see if raps gives us a prize?

The funny thing is, at least here, after the first three books I've never seen a bookstore sell out of Harry Potter books or movies.
All of them had pre-sales with a deposit where they'd hold the book for you, which I took advantage of, but none of them ever actually ran out of books.
So what the hell did people go so crazy for? It's not like the story changes if you get it the day of or the day before the release.
No, but you always run into that one idiot who insists on giving you spoilers. I had spoilers for ALL of the original trilogy Star Wars movies, and have come to have a violent hatred of spoilers of any kind. Hence my getting the books ASAP so no-one gives anything away.

One funny thing did happen near the release of HP book 7, though. There's a BUNCH of Harry Potter fans at my church, including this one middle-aged couple who bought a copy each plus one for their son, so no-one would be trying to steal anyone else's copy. Anyway, the normally mature-acting dad was following a teen girl around after church (no, not in a weird way), just grinning and saying, "I know how it ends! I know how it ends!" She was covering her ears and trying her best to ignore him. It was VERY funny.
