Eep! I'd run Shields and burn Sage if it didn't affect my Ghosts (got two of them). I do keep bells at each window and door, though (ringing bells scare off the evil spirits). Any ideas I can use besides my bells to keep my place safe without causing my ghosts pain? Now a member of that alien race called Management.

i asked but he doesn't know what herb it is in the Philippines.
and apparently, from the original case... i didn't realize this but, they determined that the other religious group actually didn't care that it was sage. they called the cops just cos they were against the witches. so the other group got in trouble cos it was determined to be a "hate crime".
i think it's "resolved" now tho.

I've never noticed much of a similarity between the two, except that they both smell like burning plants. I don't really like the smell of pot (at least that's what I've assumed the smell is. There's lots of odd things going on at Wakarusa, a local music/camping festival. Drugs are many of them.), but sage smells nice. I prefer sweetgrass, though.
I heard that the smell of sage gives some people headaches. I'm glad that's not me..."Have muck knowledge, but no certainties. Live. I am sorry, Sorianna." -Gverion

I've been able to sage and keep in the good spirits in. When smudging the house, I am able to do my ritual and ask for only harmful and malicious spirits to leave. I still have the little girl who's just a fun spirit around. She stayed.Quoth RetailWorkhorse View PostEep! I'd run Shields and burn Sage if it didn't affect my Ghosts (got two of them). You can also salt every opening- windows, doorways, sinks, toilets, tubs etc to keep bad spirits out, but if they are inside, they may be trapped in there as well (a word of warning for you). You don't know what Hades is until you've worked at least one Christmas Season in a toy store that offers free gift wrapping.

Yup, they're inside with me. Haven't seen the Perv in a while (I noticed him when I got out of the shower about two years ago), but I got Nana (a ghost who's not related to me but I've had following me around since EQ and I were puppies) around still. She goes with me to work when she feels like it. She's the one that possessed a My Little Pony Dad had gotten me when I was.....5? 6? I dunno. Hit me with a PM about smudging the house to keep the evils out?Quoth InsuranceGuru View PostI've been able to sage and keep in the good spirits in. is right!
I'd love to sage my place, but we're not allowed to burn anything in the residence.
Neither are we, but I did it anyway. I just turned off the fire alarm, smudged, aired out the house and turned it back on.
I used to do that in my old dorm too. I'd stick a towel on the draft space between the carpet and door, take off the alarm detector (it was a shitty dorm so the sprinklers didn't work), smudge, open up the door and let the smoke out.
Then again, I don't like to be told what I can and cannot do in my own home.

Yeah, but for me it's a $500 fine if I'm caught having disabled the fire alarm, $250 for having something burning, and as I work in the same building, I could get fired. I. Don't. Think. My shields are pretty non-restrictive. I work more with intent than anything else. Kind of a "bad things go around this place without noticing, thanks" sort of shielding. I'm not really explaining it all that well, though.Quoth RetailWorkhorse View PostAny ideas I can use besides my bells to keep my place safe without causing my ghosts pain?
Yeah, things trapped inside shields can be really annoying. I had something give me nightmares for a few days (I call them nightmares, but they felt a bit on the ridiculous side, even when I was in the middle of them) until I had the ex pull down the shields he had put up. Turns out that I have a finer touch at it than he does.Quoth InsuranceGuru View PostYou can also salt every opening- windows, doorways, sinks, toilets, tubs etc to keep bad spirits out, but if they are inside, they may be trapped in there as well (a word of warning for you).

Herbs are good too. I like to hang a bit of dried rosemary over the master bedroom window, sage works wonders. Its absolutely delightful to smell when you walk into the room. Its quite yummy.
As was mentioned, salt, bells... a nice besoom next to your fireplace if you have one or your main entrance. I have one I got for Yule, its this dragon-shaped besoom and he rests against the side of my fireplace/altar.
Stones are good too. Get some nice big ones if you can or just a handful of little ones near the door. I have some large ones at my doorstep along with pine cones and broken branches I find on my path home (as in directly in the little walkway that leads up to my door).
If you want to get decorative, you can take a glass jar and fill it with stones, broken glass nails or what have you and leave it outside your doorstep. Its normally burried in the ground near the door but if you live in apartment complex and have the yard people come in frequently or you think you'll forget about removing the jar when you move, just leaving it by your door works. You can leave it inside if you feel someone might take it and run if you leave it out of doors.
At school, I had a large mason jar filled with black sand and pebbles from a beach. I had the top covered with a square piece of dark purple cloth which was held in place with a white ribbon. It rested against my windowsill.
Edited to add:
In Feng Shui (sp?) (and I have instinctively done this before reading up on it too) people place mirrors just inside the doorway, in such a way that it faces the door. Its to reflect bad energy out of the home. If you don't like that imagery, you can light a candle in front of a mirror. It too will reflect the energy whence it came but because you've lit a candle and filled it with intent, you can imagine the back energy flowing out and being grounded as to harm none.
Catholics annoint their doorways with holy oil/water. I've done it myself with holy water and drawn pentacles versus crosses.Last edited by AnqeiicDemise; 05-18-2008, 02:06 AM."The problem isn't usually that there are stupid people in the world as much as it is that the stupid people like to call or come in and point out how stupid they are to the working public" -Justa
