    Going Out of Business

    Can't believe I've waited so long to post this.

    Roughly a month ago, a local canoe/kayak rental place had a "going out of business" ad in the paper. My boyfriend and I were pretty excited, since we had been talking about getting a canoe.

    We went to the place a few days later. Indeed there was large sign saying "Going out of business!". We looked around and saw some aluminum canoes we liked. One guy appeared to be an employee, so we asked him about the price. He quoted us something around $475 - much more than we were expecting.

    He then went on to say that we'll have to talk to the owner, since he's not sure if they can sell anymore of those canoes. I asked "But aren't you going out of business?". His reply: Yes. In December.

    I was speechless. My boyfriend simply said "Have a good day" and walked away.

    I can't believe the audacity of them advertising a going out of business sale, when they actually wanted to keep most of their stock for summer rentals! When we finally do buy a canoe, it won't be from them.

    Idiots. (NOT you and your boyfriend!)

    Sure, by saying that they're going out of business, they'll get lots of people coming in, but I doubt those same people will be buying much.

      Too bad there isn't a time limit a store can post that. I remember hearing though that if they do post going out of business signs they actually have to close.

        By putting up those signs almost 8 months before they plan to close, it wouldn't surprise me if they end up having to close sooner.

          I was waiting for some handbags I liked to drop in price in a small store that was "closing down" last year. They kept those signs up for a few weeks, and usually stores mark things down when they are closing, you know, to sell as much as possible. Well the prices never changed on these bags, and I figured out why: they never closed! They just took the signs down! Like the OP, I will never go back to that store.

              There was a rug store in Seattle that was notorious for this. They would alternate between "new management" and "going out of business" signs.

                What an underhanded tactic. Why not just advertise a clearance sale? At least then customers can expect that not all the stock will be on sale.

                Usually misery loves company, but it doesn't make me feel any better to know that you all have seen other stores do the same thing. Isn't there some kind of law against this practice?

                    That's actually illegal here in North Carolina. You're only allowed to have a Going out of Business sale for (I believe) a month with an extension only if you still have x% of inventory left in stock afterwards.

                      That reminds me of a regular ad we get in the Los Angeles area.

                      There's a discount appliance shop called Crazy Gideon's. They have not Going Out of Business Sales all the time.

                        There's a store around here that's been going out of business since I was in high school (Class of 2000, do the math). My mom was just commenting the other day about how she'd love to go do...er...well, she mentioned wanting to do very illegal things to the business. LOL

                          Was this in Nebraska? There was a local furniture store that had a new "going out of business" sale every week for almost 3 years. Finally the state law was changed so companies actually have to close within a certain time frame after announcing they're closing.

                          I feel for the employees, though. I worked for a DVD/music store than went through closing and liquidation. Scummy vultures from all walks of life were on the prowl for discounts. Worst retail experience ever and I don't wish it on anyone. Our store closed right after Christmas, Happy Holidays. Especially since retail jobs are hard to find after the first of the year. Not bitter though, can you tell

                            Rug store in this neck of the woods as well that does the same thing. I recall seeing the signs a few months before I go off to college, then coming back 4 years later and they're still there. I also thought there was a time limit (aren't those sales handled by outside liquidation companies?).

                              There is a store in a somewhat nearby city that has closing sales all the time. I used to live in range of a radio station from the city and I would hear the going out of business ads all the time.
