One fuel stop I had in Louisiana, you hand them your card, they turn on the pump, then process the transaction after you finish fueling. Nice in theory, except when the pump kicked out before I was full. They processed the transaction and re-started the pump, but ComData refused the second transaction (fortunately they also took MasterCard). It turns out ComData has a $1000 daily limit - and 233 gallons runs over that (last 20 gallons went on MC).
What happens if ComData is the only card the person has which the station accepts, and they get the pump re-started in good faith (i.e. they intend to pay for the fuel, they just don't know about the daily limit)? TCH also has a $1000 limit, but it's per-transaction, and at Esso's "Key to the Highway" the cardlock terminal tells you up front what your limit is (1200 litres in my case).
