  • Didn't work, did they?

I went to a car boot sale this morning. For those who don't know of this phenomenon, people turn up with bric-a-brac to sell and the rule is supposedly what you can fit in your car boot. Estate cars, pick-up trucks, and large vans are often in evidence.

I noted one stall with a number of DVDs and began to hunt. Oooh! An Arnie film I've not seen! Oh great! A cheap B movie - actually, probably a C movie! Descent II and III in a box set! Oh, this is great!

Some videos. Well, I don't have a VCR or television these days, so no intere ... "The guide to better loving"? The second version of this? The third? A guide to better orgasms?

I stole a glance at the couple behind the table. These guides had apparently not worked, based on their joint expressions, and I could tell from the bloke that it wasn't his idea to put them out for sale.

I laughed all the way home.

Those things can work if you're flexible enough (both physically and mentally)...

I always assumed it was an Anglicism for a flea market.

Flea markets over here tend to be indoors and have stalls etc. Car boot sales are outdoors in car parking areas on Sundays, and quite a few local councils have managed to turn them to profit after seeing their success.

They're a fine source of crap, occasionally sprinkled with the occasional gem.

That's why I don't go any more, people all seem to have a mate that picked up a bargain for 50p then sold it for £200, so it seems to be wall to wall SCs looking for that magic 'thing'.

Oh, I think they're probably closer to a 'communal garage sale', in terms of the clientèle
