Pwning a line-jumper

This brought back memories of times when cashiers would tell me individually that a new line was opening so I wouldn't get trampled by the rush of people -- that made the "new" line 2x longer than the "old" lines lol

That and having a cashier telling me "I'm opening, you're next, come over" and having two things happen. Once another person ran over (overhearing a conversation does not mean you're next), she took care of them (only an item or two) but then apologized to me for it. The other time the cashier took my items while I was in another line, scanned them and made the person who just showed up wait boy were they upset -- my entire transaction was done from the wrong side of the register.

"I was at the supermarket checkout when a middle-aged woman used her trolley to push in front of a man standing in the queue. When the fellow pointed out that he was next in line, the woman snapped, 'If you were a gentleman, you would let me in!'. To which his response was, 'If you were a lady, I probably would have."'

I hate the way we do new queues here. Most places have individual lane queues. If a new lane opens up, the first ones to get to it are served. There is no "I can take the next customer in line here" or anything like that, let alone advance warning.

So yes, when you've been waiting 3-4 minutes already and have 2-3 people still in front of you, Johnny-come-lately who just happened to walk up at the just the right moment, and the person behind you who was slightly quicker off the bat than you, jump over there and get served before you do.

Actually, literally "next" in line can stay where they are. If I'm definitely the next one, I never even try to move. I'm next to be served anyway, what do I gain - maybe one minute? Whoopdee.

But when I'm a customer or three back and someone dives into the newly opened lane, it really Ticks Me Off.

As stated in another thread, chivalry is not dead.

Back on topic : when a new line opens, I tend to stay in the one where I am because :
- if I'm in the front of the line, I think I'm close enough to the register, and can handle the wait. No point in getting stomped on for a few places in the line.
- if I'm in the middle, most likely, those behind me will rush to the newly open till. Being rather non confrontational, I'd end up at the end of the new line, which is about as far from the register as the place where I am.
- if I'm at the end of the line, I let people stampede to the new line. Whether I change line or not, I'm going forward.

At my Holiday retail job . . .
if only one till is open and a line is forming we walk up to the next person in line and explain we are opening another till and carry items over to the till we are opening so that they are the first one.
If more than one of us are opening tills same process. First one up takes next in line, second takes the next and so forth.
If someone has complained to a manager . . .then the manager will personally handle them and at the same time page for more of us that can work till to come forward and get the rest of the line.
