Very tragic news: Michael Turner of Aspen Comics died on the 27th. He was only in his thirties, a real awesome guy, whom I did personally meet at a convention, who was always ready to smile and chat with fans.

So what do the sharky people do but show up at a local comics shop and start grabbing at anything Aspen in hopes that they can use the tragedy of his death to make their purchases valuable resale items.

That kind of human-like creature makes me SICK.

They did it to Gary Gynax's work and many many others. People are vultures. It will never change.

There's a fine line between tasteful and tasteless and the line is somewhat blurred. At the music store I used to work at, an artist would pass away and we'd create a display of the artist's work because people would come in and be interested in buying his/her CDs. Were we profiting? Yeah. But a few customers also came in and commented how nice it was we were doing something to honor the artist, because other retailers weren't doing anything.

Keep in mind that ours was a small display and we certainly didn't have any outrageous signs or anything. But someone could have seen it as horrible profiteering whereas others saw it as a tribute. Just sayin'.

But yeah, the people in your example sound pretty sucky.

Yeah those kinda people bug me. Retailers doing a tribute, out of at least partial respect, then great, fine. But vulture ebay sleazers... Just woodchip em.

Well, I believe in the very deepest of my heart of hearts in a thing called karma. And I am sure that these ghouls do not believe in karma, but I feel certain that karma believes in them.

            You know?

Same thing happened to Heath Ledger. Best Buy had a display up the same day of his death promoting to buy his movies to cherish his work.

Truely pathetic of that manager. The picture is everywhere:

Jbball, I don't see exactly what's sucky about that... it was a tribute, and it looks like it was a fairly small display. I think it was nice. There's a big difference between making things easier to find and profiteering (which would have been ordering tons of Heath Ledger movies and putting up big signs). I know that whenever an artist I have really liked dies, I tend to veer towards their stuff for a while, just as a sort of memorial. (For instance, I've gone out and bought a bunch of older Jeff Healey albums and the new one recently). NOt for the collector value, but .. I don't know, to have a small piece left.

It's going to bite them on the ass anyway. I don't know who this guy is but a comic book isn't going to icrease in value just because a contributor died. An artists death only increases the value of things actually made with his own hands and signed reproductions, you know, things that can't be made any more because of his death.

It's like what happened shortly after Dale Earnhart died. Suddenly, *everything* with that stupid #3, his name, or even remotely related to him...became "collectible." All sorts of tacky crap came out of the woodwork, including one poor fool who attempted to corner the market on domain names. Needless to say, the buyers of that crap soon found themselves stuck with it. I found that sort of thing rather hilarious!

Michael Turner is the co-creator of Witchblade and creator of Fathom. He created his own publishing company, Aspen MLT Inc., and was one of the few recent comic artists I could recognize the art right away.

Protege brought up what I was thinking of. There was more than one instance of people cashing in on that. I read somewhere (walmartsucks?) about how within 24 hours of Dale's death, merchandise with his name and number on it was pushed out on the floor, and in one instance, a note was found in a box stating something along the lines of: Earnhardt just died, get this out and raise the prices.
