  • I was wrong, they were wrong, should I complain ?

Today I met my mother for lunch and we wandered down a major shopping street in central London afterwards.

As I recently discovered while having lunch at my mothers with 2 other guests she has only 3 forks, and indeed only 3 dining chairs. I had to sit on a footstool and she ate her dinner with a spoon

So we're walking past some of the big shops and she decides she wants to buy some forks. First shop - the kitchen section is downstairs and the lift is out of order. She's disabled and at the moment really can't do with stairs, so we go out and decide to at least window shop in the much more expensive much posher shop next door.

Now this shop is seriously expensive. They have the shower gel I love but have only ever had for Christmas or Birthday presents - £16 for a not at all huge bottle.

They do however have some fairly reasonably priced individual knifes, forks spoons. Turns out they don't actually have any at the moment, but...

We're looking at the displays which hold sets of each design almost but not quite vertical on foam surrounds. I gesture, knock the display and send cutlery flying I feel like a fool. It makes a huge clattering noise right through the shop and also hurts as most of the set hit my foot in an open toed sandal.

A member of staff comes up, I'm bright red because I was a clumsy fool. I've gathered up the stuff and I'm putting it back. I say I don't need any help.

So left on my own I put everything back and discover (a) the display is missing pieces. The foam surround is held on by two screws at the top, and should be held on by two more at the bottom. They are missing. That's how when I hit the display the foam moved and everything fell. Also a couple of the spoons have previously been blu tacked into place suggesting that they know they are unstable.

So we go back to walking through the store, but as we go into the next section (Christmas decorations all ready !) I realise that my foot is bleeding. A couple of tiny punctures (a fork !) and a long broken scratch (clearly from a serated knife). Nothing serious, but it does hurt a little, and had marked my foot quite obviously. It also means I may have got blood on their display...

My mother thinks I should make a fuss. I am still embarrassed about being clumsy, but yes the incident should be reported. I track down the man who saw the original accident and explain.

He wanders off and tries to get me a plaster (not really needed) and then says he can't get into the office where the first aid kit is kept. Which is really quite worrying (and possibly illegal). I explained I just wanted to make sure it was reported, and that they were aware of the problem with the display.

I'm considering writing. I don't think they handled it properly (and I'm not convinced he did record the accident), and if the display hadn't been broken I wouldn't have hurt myself. I would be very amenable to vouchers - that would bring that shower gel into my price range. I was joking to my mother that I wished I'd lost a toe because they had wonderful silly bright purple chandeliers for £650... but I don't want to be the kind of sucky customer who vulture vouchers , or who blames stores for their mistakes. And if I hadn't been clumsy I'd never have knocked the display.

    Advice please ?

And if anyone wants advice - don't drop an entire place setting of heavy cutlery on your foot. It hurts.

I think that they need to know that their associates can't get to a first aid kit. What if you had hurt yourself more seriously than just a few scratches? Would they have risked using a napkin as a compress until an ambulance arrived?

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.

Clean napkins make fine compresses. As long as the blood is flowing out and you're not using something that's been festering in filth, just about anything makes a fine compress.

I would write a letter to the owner of the store. Thing is, they are probably the one who said "just tack it up". So, probably won't do much good.

My interest in the story is ... what happened to those items that broke your skin? I'd hate to think I bought a food preparation device that had drawn blood on someone! Gross, and quite possibly seriously dangerous.

I think in this particular instance I'd probably just let it go. Certainly if you do pursue it, do not even mention vouchers. If they offer you some, take with grace and do a happy dance, but don't ask.

I'm not going to ask for vouchers.

The items were display only so no one will have bought cutlery with my blood on it. However the shop should have cleaned them.

While many things will do to stop bleeding having a first aid box the staff can't access is almost certainly against the law.

I doubt anyone told staff to just tack things up. This is a very high end shop, and part of a large chain. It looked like 2 screws had fallen out and just not been replaced. I doubt management would be happy with this. They could of course be unhappy and take it out on the staff which I don't want.

I don't think it would be sucky of you to send the management a polite note about your concerns, as long as you don't ask for compensation or outright blame the staff for what happened.

For some reason, every time a shelf, display or other bit of store equipment has loudly crashed to the ground nearby, I've been directly in the path of it 9 times out of 10. I've been like this since I was a baby, and I guess I'm just (un)lucky that way. It's bizarre, but it happens to me all the time. I've literally been hit dozens of times over the years. Sometimes it's my fault, but usually, I haven't even touched the display when it falls over and nails me. My mother has a similar problem with balls at sporting events (everything from basketballs to hockey pucks, she's been hit by them).

So, I have a pretty broad range of experience when it comes to the aftermath of such collapses. I know it's just bad luck, so I've never sued anyone over it. It's just bad (if somewhat reliable) luck. Complaining about it, on the other hand, I've done that before, when I felt it warranted, though I usually just laugh it off.

However, inaccessible first aid kits, poorly constructed displays, and so forth, are definitely not acceptable or excusable. By all means, complain about it.

You reminded me of something that happened to me once, where I really should have made a fuss. I just didn't get around to it somehow.

I was in a large DIY store when one of their members of staff (!) knocked a can of paint from a high shelf so that it splattered everywhere including up my leg. They were pretty nice about it and took me into the back of the store to get me cleaned up - but while my jeans washed out fine my shoes didn't. I really should have complained about that because they owed me a pair of shoes.

Mostly when I'm shopping things crash down loudly around me and I am at fault. I am a klutz, and indeed managed to knock a whole display of pencil cases down in another shop (domino style) on the same trip as the cutlery incident.

As a chain store they would definetly want to know. Write a letter to corportate, tell them what you said here, you knocked it over, but if you hadn't knocked it over if it had been installed properly. You are worried about the first aid kit. And tell them you love the store and want to continue shopping but your worried about your safety and other safety. If their a good store they might send you a coupon in the main without you asking for it, to "make up" for the incident.

You have a health-and-safety concern about their store. That ALWAYS warrants a letter.

                    3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.

my own opinion... let them know the display is wobbly and that two of the items cut your foot. If they offer you any freebies as an apology, turn them down... "Oh, no, I'm not looking for that... I just hope the display can be fixed so someone else doesn't get hurt... And you might want to ensure no one sells the display items since they've been contaminated with my blood."

                      but that's just my idea.
