  • and you thought this was a good idea, why?

OK, I know there are good CDL truckers out there, and for the love of God would y'all please take the routes involving Salt Lake and get rid of the fuckwads driving trucks around here.

Today I decided that I wanted subway, and I wanted an excuse to use the new Legacy Parkway (finally finished, best way to get from the west side of Salt Lake, which is where SLCC is, to the north counties), so I decided, what the hell, it's a nice afternoon I have the day off, just for a change I'll go up to the Farmington Subway (which had a sighting as well, but I'll add that at the end as to not go too far off topic). And might I say, I love that road, not as much traffic, nice scenery, interesting driving (it's not just straight and level), but coming back into town I had to stop at the library and decided to take the traditional way back into downtown, which is I15, exit on Beck Street.
Now Beck street is 3 lanes each direction, major road heavy traffic... get the idea. I'm cruising along and in front of me I see a truck in the left turn lane start to swing wide... I think to myself, there is no way in hell that guy is going to... and he did, this truck (5 axle, good 60ft trailer at least) decided it would be a good idea to try to do a U-turn across the main road in and out of the north side of downtown no less... what is wrong with people... and then after going to the library I saw another truck (this one granted was only a small 3 axle with maybe a 20-25ft trailer) heeing and hawing to do a U-turn on 300 East (1 lane each direction with a turn lane). Seriously, was this idiot truck drivers decide to block traffic day?

Oh and the subway sighting, a mother and her two kids were there, and the older kid said "I'd like to touch the baby" (I'm assuming he was talking about his baby sister) which was weird enough, but he looked to be only 3 or 4 at most so not really sighting worthy, what is sighting worthy, his mother's response was "no, the baby is not a toy"... seriously, does that sound off and weird to anyone other than me? Does she always refer to her daughter as "the baby"?

eta- one more from today, rather than starting a new thread.
Today was bus pass day at SLCC, ie, this is the day when all the bus drivers decided to get anal and say that sense the passes for this year were now available they'd no longer accept student ideas as passes. There are 20,000 students at Redwood Campus... they schedule 1 person to handle distributing the bus passes... oh and this person also had to deal with parking permits and student IDs (which granted other than standard replacement requests shouldn't have been that much)... yeah, that was a nice long line, but here's what really gets me, they are no longer printing an expiration date on the cards, they will be electronically encoded as a magnetic card attached to my student ID... and as long as my student ID is valid the bus pass will be valid... and we all have seen how many posts I have about UTA... anyone else seeing this turn into a complete and royal clusterfuck?

    About the mother:

It does sound a little weird but I think she was just picking up on the phrasing the first child used. I doubt she refers to it as "the baby" all the time.

Trucker idiocy happens a lot during my daily/nightly commute. Every morning almost, as we just get on the highway, there is some semi truck who refuses to wait a few extra minutes to clear traffic, and will just pull out in front of everyone. Of course, turning left, taking up both lanes, everyone has to jam their brakes, and naturally, they can't accellerate to save their own lives. So everyone scatters to one lane to get the hell away from the idiot who just couldn't wait.

And semi trucks in town.....trying to back their trucks up into an alley......in the middle of the way in the middle of the road, backing up.........

My dad works for a semi truck company. He says if anyone ever called the number for the company and reported one of the truckers for pulling out into traffic when not safe, they'd be in heap big trouble. Gotta wonder why more truck companies are so lenient with what their drivers do.

Age 2- 4 is usually classified as toddler - and if it were your own child or one in your care wouldn't you use a name instead of the term baby?

I would like to know when it became the thing to do when driving down a 3 lane each way road to turn right from the left turn lane, left lane, or even middle lane? (or reverse left turn from right)

I have almost had 3 wrecks in the last 24 hours over this. (no turn signal or signal to go left and they go right)

I realize that several thousand pounds of power can make you seem like king/queen of the road . . .but hello other people are on the road too.

I am also loving the people that really want to be in the lane you are in and you have to use your breaks for them to be there. Especially when they don't signal and give you a chance to ease up.

Sorry, I am just tired of the surge fo bad drivers I have been encountering lately.

but would you refer to your own child as "the baby" or would you refer to them by their name or relationship

ie, would you say something like "the baby said her first word today"
or would you say "my daughter (or even my baby) said her first word today" or "(name) said her first word today" when talking about your kid?

Just today I saw a truck back into the turning lane in the middle of the intersection. There was a car there as well, no less. The driver then got out and started checking his bumper.

I call my daughter 'baby' all the time.

"Be quiet please, Baby is sleeping." or "I have to take Baby to the doctor."

I call her by her name or nickname as well too, but baby just comes so easily to me.

You would be surprised. My brother and I are constantly called "The Twins." by friends and family. It's like we're both a living entity bound together by glue.

We're also ADULTS and we're stilled called "The Twins".

I watched a truck hauling cut logs (twin trailors) blow through a red light on my way in to unload our truck today.

Considering how fast he was going, I wouldn't have stopped either. That would'a made one hell'a mess.

Call me strange, but I don't like when people call the youngest the baby even when they are a baby still. I use the child's name. Strange concept. My best friend says things like, "the baby & I" or "do you think he will see the baby?" I am like...YOUR SON ROMAN! His name is Roman!

Know what else I can't stand? I can not stand when parents refer to their child's age as "22 months old." It bothers me so much I go, so almost 2 YEARS then. 36 months? Can't we convert this to years??? The child is 3 for God's sake! The only time I rationalize using months is if the child is younger then 1 year old, cuz then the child is actually only months old.

okay...I am done now. This was a little OCD...

With the month thing for age of babies. . . .
Up to about 24 months everything is based on month not covert to years.
As in the size of clothing is 18 month, 16 month, 24 month. The Dr's charts of where a baby should be at with height, weight, motor skills etc is based of age in months.
So up to the 24 month point I can see using month for answering how old. at 25 month the answer becomes 2 years and then go by years from that point on.
Clothes then become 2T, 3T, 4T for the age and then the word Todler . . .at 2 they become classified as a todler. (in Preschool beome Todler or Preschooler depending on the person speaking)
Age 5 is usually when they start kindergarten depending on where birthday falls and the school district. That makes them Kindergartners. (Then it goes by school level, pre teen - tween, teen, adult)
Ah, finally getting to spurt out some of that material I paid so much to learn and never get to use.
