    I Really Don't Want To Be Here Right Now

    So my boyfriend and I stopped for dinner last night at this diner. We sit down, start flipping through the menu. Our waitress comes over, asks how we're doing. We say fine, and ask how she is. Very brightly, she replies, "I'm okay, I just really don't want to be here right now! Can I get you something to drink?"

    That was really awkward. I can understand not wanting to be at work, I've certainly been there myself many a time. But to be a waitress, working for tips, and bluntly announce to your table that you don't want to be there? LoL The desire to get the hell out of there must have trumped everything else. It must have been a really long day

    "I'm ready to go home" might have been a better way to say that. Granted, it's still not the best thing to tell your customers, but it's better than saying flat out you don't want to be there.

      haha I came close to that one day, my very last day at the craft store, I couldnt wipe the smile off my face

      I had one customer comment on it and I let it slip "this is the last day I have to drag myself to this....um... place"

      luckily she laughed it off but the look from my coworkers wasnt to pleasant

        Well that's better than "I've had the shits for the last three days and there's no running water in the sinks and we're out of toilet paper". :-)

            When I was a waitress, I said it a lot. It usually got a laugh out of my customers though.

              I got one similar last night at the grocery store.

              Checkout dude was talking to the lady in front of us while checking her out. She goes to leave, he waves, turns to me and says "I hate that woman!" I replied "oh?" "Yeah she's my manager, and I'm only supposed to be part time, but she's got me working full time"

              What do you say to that? I said nothing, and the rest of our transaction was completed in silence...

                I see what's wrong with it. We go to restaurants and pay to be served ... to not have to deal with the worries of cleaning, cooking, etc. To just relax and enjoy the meal.

                While we should treat the staff like the humans they are (dignity, respect, reasonable tips), customers really don't want to hear about their problems.

                Tell your friends, talk to your family, complain to your boy/girl-friend ... but, to customers? Slap on a smile and if you don't have something pleasant to say, just ask politely what we'd like to eat.

                Why? Because, quite bluntly, most customers don't want to hear the waitresses whine.

                    I gotta agree with marasbaras. While I understand waitresses are human, we don't go to a restraunt to hear someone bitch and moan. We've got families for that, lol.

                      I say as long as it's said in jest, and not a monotone *Damn my manager for making me work* way, I don't mind it. I can see how it may create suck to a group of people, but I always joke around with my waitstaff, and try to make the experience pleasurable for everyone.

                      Besides, in my line of work, when we call other agencies, it's always "How's it going?" "Good, since I've only got an hour left, what about you?" or "Other than this overdose/injury accident/suicide attempt*, not bad at all" I've gotten used to it.

                      *not meant to take anything lightly, it's just that when you work in my line of work for so long, it becomes commonplace. We still take appropriate caution, but it's not really taboo to talk about anymore.

                          oh yeah, I'd do that at the call center with jokes... whenever my monday came around and people asked how I was doing I'd make a comment like (in a cheery voice) "oh, can't wait for the weekend, only 39 hours and 15 minutes left, should go by in a flash "

                          the variation on that joke that I use at the hotel is normally "quite good, it looks like it's going to be another shift where I'm paid to stand around and twiddle my thumbs... too bad more jobs can't be like that"

                            I ended up feeling really bad because it was obvious she wanted to get the hell out of there, and our table was holding her up from doing that. (It wasn't that the place was closing, it was early, but I guess her shift was supposed to be over?) Actually, I think my boyfriend was actually the sucky one! Our waitress dropped the check off right after our food had been delivered, and if I was paying I would have paid right away, but boyfriend insisted on waiting until we were done. So it made it quite awkward because she kept walking by our table to see if we'd paid yet, and boyfriend just sat obliviously chowing down while I felt increasingly uncomfortable.

                              I don't see how he was sucky. If he had wanted to order something else then she would have had to make another bill. I would have waited to pay too.

                              Working with people requires that you leave your problems at the door and do your job. If you can't do that on a certain day then you shouldn't be at work.

                              She clearly wasn't capable of doing her job that day, and that's not your issue.

                              While I wouldn't say anything to a manager, that type of behavior will lead to me avoiding that person on any future visits.
