  • Showing ID at the gym

I work out at a local YMCA. All of our membership cards have our pictures on it and they have a posted sign that says Picture ID (either your membership card or a Driver's License) is required. If you forget your card you leave your DL with the front desk. If you bring a desk they leave their DL at the front desk. If you want to take a tour or get a 3-day pass prior to joining you leave your DL at the desk.

Last night I went to work out and as soon as I stepped into the door I heard this guy yelling. He was bringing in a guest and she didn't have her ID. Then to make matters worse the guy in front of me forgot his membership card and didn't have ID either (I hope he didn't drive there!) and he got into the argument.

The first guy was yelling up a storm saying that the policy was stupid and he just wants his friend to go in to see his son swim. The woman at the desk was just saying, "I'm sorry, it's policy. You can go in, but your friend can't."

At that point I REALLY wanted to say something -- tell the guy to STFU or to tell him he's an idiot and that those rules are there for all of our safety - especially the children! But I didn't. I got my card scanned and went in and minded my own business.

Should I have said something? I know the front desk woman didn't cave. Still, the guy really made me mad for harassing the poor woman. What would you have done?

I would've asked for the manager and explained the situation. I wouldn't confront the customer myself in case he gets offended.

At the exercise facility I go to, our cards don't have pictures on them. When the card gets scanned, the picture shows up in the computer.

I'm a short fuse (particularly of late. I'm sorry everyone!). I'd offend. Big time.

They know the rules, theres no need to go all SC on everyone.

At my health club, there have been a rash of thefts from the locker room. I and about 4 other members had ours wallets stolen out of locked lockers.

They're now real Nazis about making certain that no one gets into the gym who is not a member (the card scanner brings up your picture on the monitor) or who has left behind an ID (and fill out a form) if they're taking a tour or just using the club on a one-time basis. They have security cameras at the entrance to each of the locker rooms in hopes of deterring future break-ins.

I have no patience for folks who want to be exceptions to the rules. I don't want my locker room to be full of people who refuse to identify themselves to management beforehand.

My gym is on Capitol Hill. Lots of Senate staffers just out of college who leave their clothes and valuables in unlocked lockers. All a thief needs is 30 seconds of privacy and he can steal 3-4 wallets.

LMAO..I was too wondering about that.

Maybe its a good workout to carry a desk to and from your car? Though I dont think any desk of mine has a DL.

The wife and I go to the Y as well and they have the same policy. I also do a lot of Printing and copy work for a local gym that has a lot of well...very buff types of body builders there. I don't think that anyone would ever dare hassle the girls at the front counter for fear of a client turning their bones too mush (yup never fuck with the guys who can curl a Volks Wagon...and I'm only half kidding about that).

Since I workout at home, I do not have a problem with showing Id, if need be.

Whoops my bad on the typo. That's what I get for typing while attempting to listen in to a meeting at the same time. Brain in 2 places!

At my gym, once the card is scanned, the picture shows up on the computer. The card also fits on a keychain, so it's not that hard to lose. There are signs all over reminding people that thefts can happen, and not to leave valuables in the lockers. When I go to the gym, I just take my DL and membership card, as well as an iPod that I listen to while I work out, but that's worn around my arm or clipped to my waist.
