Sorry dont want to sound harsh but it suprises me that people get annoyed at that sort of thing. By signing up with costco dont you also agree to this practice? And by not being a member is it really that odd that they wont let you in? It's a club/membership deal not a regular supermarket.

Sorry just my 2c on the whole costco door checker thing.
I would have to agree. They do require a membership card to purchase things and yes, even to simply enter the building if that is how things are supposed to be.

... this older gentleman employee...asks us all if we have member cards....I say, "Oh man no I don't. I lost my wallet yesterday!"
Then the employee says, "In order to be here you have to have a Costco membership card." Which, btw, was news to us cuz what we had come in here for hot dogs how many times before and never had someone chase us down from the entrance. We mention this and he tells us that we weren't allowed into this area without them. The guy proceeds to walk us all out
Devil's Advocate here (and let me preface this by saying this is not any sort of personal attack, nor is it meant to offend anyone)... let's put the shoe on the other foot and reverse roles for a moment.
What if you were the card checker person at a membership retailer.
Your boss told you to not let anyone without a card in a certain area.
What would you do if someone came in and couldn't show you a membership card when you asked for it?

Many of the posts on this board tell similar stories as the one of the thread's OP... only from the point of view of the card checker and not the customer sans membership card.
Had this happened to any number of members on these very forums... it would not surprise me in the least to see them post something similar to the quoted post... only they would post it as a response they received from someone whom they would classify as an SC.

"I've always done it this way before"... "I've never been asked to show my card before"... "The 'other guy' always lets me get in without showing my card"...

There are posts with those phrases almost every day... and each time the forum member attributes such responses as SC behavior.
What was with that overzealous guy???? What if we had been getting a hot dog and were going to get memberships and this guy ran us out??? It was weird...
It could have been his first day. You said that you had never seen him before. He was probably just doing what he was instructed to do, same as any of us do at our own jobs.
Maybe he could have double-checked with a member of the store's management.
Maybe he could have checked with someone at the member registration counter to see if they could get you a new card.
Maybe he could have done things differently... but, that's not the point.
Just because he is doing his job, and doing it properly, to the letter (despite how employees on previous occasions would have reacted)... it does not make him "overzealous" in any way, shape or form.

True enough, but it has never happened since then, either. And we were only in the food court, and that door isn't ever manned except for the receipt checkers and they are looking for the people with carts full of things. Honestly, I think he didn't last because he would chase people down. I had noticed him a couple days before this incident when I was there, (manning the side where memberships are checked) I think, but I never saw him after that.

Tons of people with and without memberships go into the food court area to get food at lunchtime (Costco here is on a main busy street). So, this guy seemed kinda outa place, honestly.

Was I the only one here who thought of that scene in Fun with Dick and Jane where Dick chases that woman around the store to greet her, regarding the title?

        Back on-topic...

There is a wholesale store that I know of, but it's hidden away, so a lot of people don't know about it. It's mostly used by small businesses wanting cheap stock.
