  • Gun store wtf-ness

I went to the local indoor firing range today to try out my dad's .45 to see if I wanted one of my own. As I'm waiting/ trying to find eye and ear protection, I get to overhear part of a conversation between two employees.

Apparently, a woman had bought a gun there (she thinks) sometime in the past few years. She thinks it was a revolver, and it might have been a .22 (which she pronounced "Tu-Tu") and she wanted the serial number. (It had been stolen out of her car.)

When I came out after shooting, I got to overhear that she actually bought the gun at a different store in a different city.

    Okay, that's just... oi...

Words cannot begin to describe the feeling of dread I have at realizing I'm no longer the least surprised by this stuff.

    Also, how was the .45?

It made my wrist hurt. I want to try a revolver next, maybe get one of those. Or get a .38.

Yeah, I've heard revolvers are much nicer if others are too hard on your wrists.

How do you not remember where you bought a gun? Unless you're buying them all over the place...it's one of those not very often big time purchases....plus, you're supposed to keep the paper work with the serial number on it for your own records so she herself should have had that information. (though, I can't say I haven't lost stuff before or been scatter brained but still....)

          Just a little aside:

To help strengthen your wrists, you can try an exercise I've seen have some good results. Take a wieght, about five to ten pounds to start with, and tie a rope to it that is as long as you are tall at the shoulders plus a little extra for knots. Tie the other end of the rope tightly to a foot long rod. Now hold the rod on the ends with both hands, and hold your arms straight out from your body. Wind the rope up, raising the wieght up until it touches the rod. Then slowly unwind it back to the floor. Repeat a few times (maybe ten?) for one session. Do this several times a week, and increase the wieght as you feel comfortable.

Between the wrists and practicing your shooting stance, you should be able to handle the kick from larger rounds better.

            What a responsible gun owner!

Now I understand yes sometimes you have to carry a gun in a car... but to have it stolen FROM the car means you left it unattended and probably in a public area.

Now yeah, I've used guns with the company but haven't owned my own yet... but owning a firearm is a large responsibility. And part of that responsibility includes ensuring it can't easily be stolen... even if it means you have to take it with you whenever you leave the car. And if you're going some place where you can't take it... that means Mr Gun gets to ride in the trunk in a gun case, or stay at home.

Seriously... When I shot last in Virginia I scored pretty well... and I had considered buying one mainly to get my score up at the range. However the apartment was sucky and if I can break into my own apartment, that means other people can too. Which meant my plans would include finding adequate and safe storage, like at a range. ... "My Car" would NOT be the answer.*

(ended up not buying one though cos I ended up transferring to Japan and they don't allow guns to come into the country.)

            * plus the company would have gotten a little pissed off about that cos they have written policies (hell they even made signs) on that one.

              I dunno if it's an RAF thing but I've always known a .22 as a "two-two".

Was the first firearm i ever fired ^^ Got my marksman with that.

a .38 would be good, you can practice with that, then if you build up your wrist strength it can also fire .357.

thanks for reminding me I still have 37 months til I can get my own .45

I gotta get me a "two-two" though, that caliber seems to be the shit
