Wikipedia has a good article on these lights, but in the US its left to the states to regulate the colour and type of light, for example in Michigan IIRC, its a single large blue light atop the police car. In NJ Police use red & blue, fire (and first aid ifn i remember) use red, volunteer fire and first aid use blue, and yellow is for any non-emergency vehicle needing higher visibility. Green and purple aren't traditionally used in the US, but i suspect that may be changing, as i recently saw a parks and recreation truck in Glendale using red, clear, blue and green lights. Me, i use purple strobes in my rear turn signals for visibility, and neither purple nor green are regulated in AZ.
For a bit of fun trivia, one AZ statute says that amber or amber and white (clear) can be used on the back of a vehicle, while another AZ statute bans the use of any additional clear lights on the rear of the vehicle, including additional back up lights or safety lights (flashers).
