  • My Mother was a SC today (and I am embarrassed)

My mother came to visit. (Now mind you, my mother is a flaming nutcase)
And she is a diabetic, she is supposed to watch what she eats.

So we go to a restaurant here in this small town and we happen to know a lot of people that work there.

She ordered a dish called Berries in a cloud.
YEARS ago, it was served on a waffle, with berries on top and surrounded by whipped cream.

Today it was served Waffle LOTS of whipped cream then the berries on top of the whipped cream.

She made the poor waitress take it back and said she wants it like it is in the picture.

The girl brings one back, whipped cream covering the waffle and berries in a bowl on the side. My mother starts crying!!
Seeing a 50+ year old woman cry because he waffle wasn't the pretty way she wanted it made me want to curl up in a hole and die from embarrassment.
My husband gave the woman a $12 tip on a $36 bill and he excused himself to the restroom and wrote the girl a note apologizing for his mother in law.

I would be willing to bet her sugar was way out of control. You probably already know if it's out of whack it can make you crazy.

Hmmm. If she asked for it "like in the picture" and it came back still different to the picture, I'm not sure I'd justify crying, but certainly continuing to press the point is warranted. How hard is it to make it like the picture? I can understand they've changed it since, and it not being that way first isn't an issue, but when specifically asked for that way, and it doesn't come out like that? That sucks.

my mother in law is also a diabetic sometimes when things are not exactly right with her she can have funny episodes when things just dont seem to add up to her the way they should (im talking situations not numbers here)

Yes it can be a pain at times but you can't be on top of the world all the time
We are the willing, led by the unknowing, doing the impossible, for the ungrateful, we have now done so much, for so long - for so many, with so little, we can now do anything with nothing!!!

besides... most of those pictures aren't of real food. they're usually plastic molds.

i don't really blame your mother cos... if her sugar is off like that, it's bound to affect her mood.

but i think it was very sweet of your husband to give a 50% tip and a written apology. i think a lot of people wouldn't do that.

If I were the waitress, I wouldn't be laughing, I'd be horrified and distressed that I upset someone that much. Anger and screaming I can handle. But a grown woman bawling because of something I may or may not have done? I'd want to start crying myself

Diabetes doesn't make me cry for no reason, but I know what will cause a 50+ woman to cry for no reason.

Devil's advocate here, but what if whoever was constructing the food didn't know what the picture looks like? As in, perhaps the cook had only been there since the new way of putting the dish together?

                      Um ... that's what the picture's for...?

Like I said, making it differently, not a problem. Pointing at the menu to the waitress and asking that it look like the picture should not be a problem. Most restaurants have plenty of menus around. If the chef doesn't know how it used to be made, it's no trouble to hand him/her a picture and say "make it look like this".

actually, I'm an amateur photographer and have done some food photography for a couple of local restaurants. They're not plastic moulds It's real food.

Ummm, do you have any clue how much effort usually goes into making most of the food look as pretty as on a menu? Even if it is real food or not doctored up with many inedible things, it is till not the thing you can do regularly or easily.

It is pretty obvious the food you see in a menu is FAR more image then fact.
