  • some vegtables would be nice.

So me and my hubby was getting our weeks of food at the store and we were checking out. There was this woman behind us with this kid.The kid was really mean but he was wild running everywhere. And of course I happen to glance at her food and there was nothing but trash.4 gallons of ice cream, chips, cookies, and the healthiest thing she had was frozen fish sticks. Now is this what parents have come to today? When I was a kid we had complete meals with two vegatables. My mom also worked 12 hours as a nurse.I dunno maybe I'm just weird because my hubby has diabetes and I'm just used to having to cook balanced meals. Maybe if she would put some veggies instead of ice cream in that kid he wouldn't be so wild.

Part of the problem with kids being so hyperactive is parents falling all over themselves to give their precious brat all the candy they want. Then they act all surprised when the kid is climbing the walls from the massive sugar rush they just got.
Makes me wonder if all the kids who were diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder are just strung out on a high sugar diet.

      Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww. Fish sticks.

Seriously, though, who's to say that the woman DOESN'T have all kinds of healthy food at home already?

        <devil's advocate> Perhaps it's Junior's birthday party and they're gearing up for it. </devil's advocate>

Granted, if I were behaving like a wild hellion before any party when I was a child, it would have been cancelled (or at least threatened to be cancelled to get me in order).

          Not all.

My parents gave us a diet of grains and cereals with fruit and milk for breakfast, lunch was bread (albiet white) with healthy fillings, fruit and/or veg, and (if we were really good) a home-made cookie. Dinner was always at least two vegetables, usually three, from different parts of the plant, along with cereals (again) and either meat or a meat equivalent (lentils, beans, etc).
Even after-school snacks were fruit, veg, eggs or some such. Cookies, cakes, cordial or soda were special occasion foods. We did often get ice cream for dessert, though.

If my brother was a child today, he'd be diagnosed with ADD or something similar.

          4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

however, a number of children are badly behaved due to poor diet.

If you feed them badly, then their brains and emotions can't stabilise or develop properly. Eating healthily and exercising is more than just good for your body, it helps keep your moods stable as well.
There was a big fuss in the UK about Smarties having artificial colourings in the blue oone which was causing hyperactivity. I always just thought 'stop giving them so many sweets, then'.

That is the exact kind of food I was brought up on. I still remember very clearly coming home from school one afternoon when I was 8 or 9, and my mom telling me to look in the freezer, there was a surprise. I open it and there are four gallons of ice cream, each in a different flavor I was always the chubby kid in school. I remember being at my friend's house in elementary school and we had some ice cream for a snack...except it was just one little scoop. And I remember looking at it in awe, thinking "Is this all we're having?" At home we'd fill our bowls up until they were overflowing.

To my mom's credit however, she did realize her error and instituted a major diet and fitness program when I was 13, and I lost 30 lbs and learned to enjoy exercising. I did suffer pretty badly from bulimia when I was 15-24, but now I'm finally kind of stabilized and eating healthily and still exercising almost every day.

If I ever did have a kid, I would NOT feed them junk. Nobody needs that crap. But if you're a parent and that's how you eat...you just pass it on of course.

you never know, she may buy her fruit and vege somewhere else

Growing up my mum went to a butcher for meat, and a grocer for fruit and vege

I still do it today, I would NEVER buy fruit or vege from a supermarket if I could help it

so my trolley never has "fresh" food in it.... but then I dont act like a brat and run wild (well not too much of a brat) and I dont have bratty kids...

                    I second the motion.

If you're a parent, force your kids to eat healthy and be active. They'll scream and whine about it and hate you for it, but later on when they're grown, they'll thank you for it.

Wish my parents had forced me to be healthy instead of just feeding me junk food when I was little. Its a helluva lot harder to work off the weight when you're an adult than when you're a kid.

Ditto and double for me, given the potential doctors have told me I have, and what I could have had if I'd stayed in good condition as a child.

Of course my Mother didn't really do anything wrong in my particular scenario. My Y-Chromosome Donor, on the other hand... well, lets just say he pretty much drove me to stay in my room, read, and binge on snacks to try to forget he existed instead of spending any time outdoors.

When I was younger, I loved to drink soda, eat all kinds of sweet stuff and chips and things like that, and just sit around and not exercise. Of course my shape reflected that.

I started to ride a bike and went cold turkey on the soda, which dropped my weight way down. I did gain a little back over the last couple of years because I haven't been exercising enough and I still like to eat sweets, but now I've made the decision to cut out meat and not eat sweets as much. My metabolism isn't what it used to be, so I'm still a little rough around the edges.

I instilled a very healthy diet when I moved out. I do my damnest to have two types of veggies (salads count as two types since I tend to have a lot in it), a grain of some sort (bread or rice) and a meat for all my meals.

Weird, I know, considering I'm always baking sweets.

My immediate family has been on a diet and RW id diabetic so I've altered my desserts to have less, to no added sugar or have cone on to use a vastly different type of sugar.

Previously, sweet tea was sweeted with granulated sugar. Now, it's sweetened with Turbinado Sugar because it has more flavour and a stronger sweet then the old stuff.

Hubby and I are taking the same approach with our kids as my parents took with my sisters and me. Growing up, McDonalds (and other fast food places) was a treat, ice cream and candy were treats, and we really only got the sweets binge at Halloween, Christmas, and Easter (and even then, our Christmas stockings and Easter baskets had oranges or hard-boiled eggs or similar, healthier things in them, as well as quite a few non-edible surprises for us). For the majority, after-school snacks were fruits and veggies, bowls of dry cereal, crackers, etc. We played outside a whole heck of a lot too.

Even now, I'm going light on soda (won't give it up completely, though; I like it too much) and other sweets, and nibbling on things like pickles and apples and carrot sticks with dressing.
