Last I heard, one vegetarian association had said gelatine was fine as it was so highly processed that it had no characteristics of the original animal to see. I'd have to track down this and see if it was the case...

Probably less a 'vegetarian association' and more a new 'vegetarian' experiencing massive wishful thhinking when they realise their favourite sweets have gelatine.

Oh, but you know what really bugs me? I don't mind that some things aren't vegetarian when it's necessary. But things where you don't need to put animal bits in? I once had this soya drink, didn't check the ingredients. It had gelatine and cochineal! It was not necessary to make a fruit flavoured soya drink with those in it!

Oh, and the yeast thing- depends on how strict a vegan you are.
Some eat yeast, happily.
Some eat yeast that isn't 'live'
SOme don't eat yeat at all.

Me, I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian. I eat eggs and milk (although less milk)

I'm an omnivore - I don't care what it is, as long as it's edible and palatable.

But I find I eat only a little meat. I suspect that's the healthy way anyway.

I just don't eat animals that are cute as adults, no bunnies, deers, or sheep. Cows, pigs, birds-no problem.

Since yeast are classed as fungi, and vegans eat mushrooms (check out the Tofurkey Feast), beer brewed according to the Bavarian purity laws (malt, water, hops, yeast) should be fine. Mass-market (some would claim them to be "recycled") beers could be a problem, since "fining agents" tend to be made from fish scales (but they're prohibited under the Bavarian purity laws).

Not that i'm saying we should all be vegans or vegetarians - i eat tasty tasty animals - but own up to what you eat.

FYI, the ones I tried taste pretty much like you would expect them to...like a steaming cup of crap. Even with marshmallows.

Somewhat, yeah. I've had to deal with way too many Fad Vegans/Vegetarians... including the long-gone, unlamented Wannabe Asshole Hippie (aka, WAH, for all the whining he did!)... and most of them don't even realize what gelatin is made of.

well there IS some tasty vegan food out there. it just takes some work making it tasty in my opinion.

when i got to go to nyc i made a point of going to Teany (use to be owned by Moby & his x-gf, but now the gf runs most of it) everything there was vegetarian or vegan. Although i'm a meat eater I tried some vegan food ... the quiche was kinda flat and square but tasty, and the peanut butter mousse was really good.

Only with the militant vegetarians/vegans who demand that everyone share that diet OMG!!!1 Ugh. I don't get on their case for choosing not to eat meat and other animal products, and I'd prefer it if they don't get on mine for choosing the opposite.

I actually bought Hubby a vegetarian/vegan cookbook for Christmas one year because he wanted it, mostly for the healthy no-meat alternative dinners. We try to save money in our food budget by not having meat at every meal (it's healthier to eat it sparingly anyway, right?), so it's nice having a whole cookbook of no-meat options. It's got some good recipes in it too. Yum.

That's the original source, but it is commercially available as a synthetic product from plant sources. My company has it's own-brand glycerine soaps registered with the BUAV (british union of anti vivisectionists).

Wow, I had no idea glycerine originally came from cows. I use pure vegetable glycerin to make moisturizer.
