  • Sucky?

I heard this from a friend and in my eyes she was a REAL SC. But she thought she was being nice...

SC and her BF (boy friend) went to a really expensive restaurant. I mean like twenty five dollars for a steak, expensive. Well, she gets there things are fine. She loves spicy stuff and ordered chicken even though she told me later she wanted steak. I was not there, thank god.

So, her food arrives and she takes ONE bite and refuses to eat anymore!! She said the chicken wasn't spicy (which come to find out was never indicated on the menu to begin with) and she didn't like the sweet potato. She said the potato was supposed to have brown sugar not butter. I personally don't know because I've never eaten them.

The manager comes up and asks whats wrong and she explains its not what she expected. He takes the plate away and comps her the food. In the meantime she is eating off of her BF's plate.

Later the waitress comes around and asks why she had her plate taken away. She explains and the waitress apologizes and basically says she hopes SC will return despite the fact that her food wasn't to her liking. SC said yes but she will get steak.

The manager offered her a free meal inplace of the one she didn't like. She refused and said she got full from eating her BF's meal. I never would have said a word because I couldn't read a menu right.

Now, the thing that REALLY made me angry was the note she left the waitress on the tip paper. She wrote: "Feel special I normally tip three dollars" and left her ten. Why the hell would you write that? It was rude.

I'll never go out to eat with her. She pulled something similar at chili's. Had this been a one time thing I wouldn't have thought as much into it but she pulls this shit everywhere and acts like the victim.

She's admitted that she likes to scam places for free food. I am surprised she didn't ask for a steak in its place. They offered free desert too but she declined. Would she have been sucky had she agreed to the free replacement or am I just being mean?

I may sound bitchie but I wouldn't have pouted over my food. I've ordered stuff I haven't liked before but that isn't the place's fault. They can't judge your tastebuds. But the staff handled her so well. For their sake I hope she doesn't return. I wouldn't have comped her meal. But she described it way worse than I wrote I can't remember all of it.

This sounds a little over the top, but it doesn't sound like she was being really sucky. I mean, I wouldn't have done that, but it's not like she demanded free food or anything, and it sounds like she perhaps left a nice tip (would it have been a nice tip? I don't know how much the meal was) because of the good treatment. Perhaps she just left a poorly worded note.

I would say that if she's scammed free food before, that's sucky; but this instance seems less so. Saying that, though, if I were eating with her that night, I would've been embarrassed. Kinda lame ordering something that's what it says it is on the menu instead of something you think it should be.

(would it have been a nice tip? I don't know how much the meal was)
Entree is aprox. $25, figure two rounds of alcohol each at $6 a glass, appetizer at about $10.

Even with the comped entree that's $59 + tax, which would put $10 at roughly 20%. Slightly generous, but not at all special for a decent meal. Figure in the comped Entree and it's suddenly $84 + tax, which makes $10 somewhat cheap and $3 an outright insult.

I think she was sucky in this instance, and she's self-admittedly sucktacular all around.

Definite suck, but she mostly sounds clueless. People like that don't get the fact that just because something is free to them that it costs other patrons money. Sometimes, sometimes, if you explain that if she scams food, especially by complaining over something imaginary, that that means the restaurant lost money. Since the restaurant lost money, and will lose money from other scammers (they seem to think they're very clever and the only people who engage in this behavior), the restaurant will now have to raise prices and the staff won't get their raises. Personally, if I explain this to someone and they continue to engage in this behavior, they're not friends of mine anymore.

I didn't really consider her sucky until you mentioned her comment on the slip and how she brags about scamming food. That makes her cheap and a scammer (read: thief). Even so, as long as she was polite, the comped meal/offer of free replacement was not sucky. She honestly didn't enjoy the meal and many decent restaurants will comp or try to "make right" by their guests. I very rarely go to a restaurant with $25 steaks. If I didn't care for my meal, I might not say anything then, but I'd be pretty upset and feel like I'd wasted money. What's more, I might share that poor experience with others, just as I would share my experience of excellent service when the restaurant replaced my meal.

Back when I was a minimum-wage slave working fast food, eating at a restaurant with $12-$15 meals about broke me. I remember once being served a pasta dish that had burnt chicken and was absolutely foul. Being that I rarely ate out, I thought the dish was MEANT to taste like crap (nope, I later earned alfredo is quite tasty and does NOT taste like charred mustard). I explained to the server I thought it was disgusting, despairing that I just wasted my hard-earned cash on something I couldn't eat. The response was "Oh, did you want a To Go box?" I left the place hungry. Another similar-in-calibar restaurant comped my meal for a minor snafu about not having english muffins for their eggs benedict. I left that restaurant more than pleased, though to their credit I would've been thoroughly happy had they done nothing. Both their food and service were excellent. It's about the impression you're left with.

Wow, I'm getting pretty wordy. The point is, the situation you provided shows the restaurant was doing what good restaurants do. Sounds like your friend refused to accept the graciousness of the establishment and was leaning towards the suck, however.

depends... i know some places force the server to eat the cost of the meal... i dont know if they do that anymore, but...

the sc had already admitted she scams for free food so she is not likely to get my sympathy
and ... she complained about food not being spicy when it wasn't advertised as such? how is that anyone else's fault but hers?

Actually, that's illegal, at least AFAIK. IANAL (enough acronym yet?), but I believe labor law actually prevents employees being dinged for people who do runners or otherwise circumvent the paying of the bill.

That would be sucky of the restaurant to me, not the customer. Even if the customer was horrible, if the restaurant makes a server pay for a mistake the customer makes, I think the restaurant is still way worse.

I'm not saying that I'm in anyway sympathetic towards her, I'm saying that the one instance, completely out of context, which it would have been to the restaurant, wasn't sucky. She didn't demand anything, or make a big deal of anything. I really don't think, if the story was as tame as she said it was, that any of the workers would be too upset with her.

And, yes, I agree, it was nobodies fault but hers that she ordered the wrong thing, but again, she didn't demand a replacement or anything. I still think it's weird, and stupid, but if she really didn't like it then I don't think she should be forced to eat it just because some people might think it's rude not to.

Saying that however, I can see how she would be construed as sucky with what has been said about her scamming food. So, I guess I think she's sucky in whole, but this particular part wasn't.
