Yeah, yeah, a friend got me hooked on WoW... (Level 37 Draenei hunter, Ally side, Level 29 Troll Warrior, Horde side, PM for handles)
So, friend and I have been questing Horde side to take advantage of the Refer a Friend bonus exp...
Wandering through Orgrimmar, alone, to try to complete the Love is in the Air achievements, some random guy starts a trade with me. So, I stop walking when the trade window opens, to see what's about to happen. I've run into some very generous people at random.
No, he drops a grey (for the non-WoW-ites out there, useless) blunderbuss into the trade.
    Me: "Uh...? Why?"
    Him: "For Free."
    Me: "Again, why?"
    Him: "No speak English."
(Note, I'm on Scryers, a largely English server, being as it's based in North America, according to the log in screen)
"Er..." says I, complete the trade, and continue on my way, thinking nothing of it until later, when me, my friend, and my friend's roommate are grouped, wandering the Crossroads, myself busy clearing my inventory of crap with a vendor, and some guy walks up to me and trades me another random grey.
"Uh," says I, out loud. "Why give this to me?"
"I don't want it," says he.
Say I, "So, why not sell it to the vendor I'm standing next to, or destroy it?"
He walks off, to jibes from friend and his roommate, as they're in the same room...

Later, we're walking out of Crossroads, myself, lvl 26, my friend, 27, friend's roommate, early 40's...
Some guy decides he wants to duel me. I stop, and turn around to find a skull-lvled asshole initiated the challenge, so I decline. (Skull level is five or more levels above yours. Very deadly) And continue walking, intent on questing/instancing... Only to get another duel challenge. I stop, again, and comment to friend/roommate abut this guy and his desire for an easy challenge... and subsequently ignore him. As we're walking out of Crossroads, he's /yelling that I'm a chicken, and I can't hear it. Only hearing friend/roommate yelling back. And I'm sitting here, thinking, "Okay, yeah, if it was JUST ME, alone, yes, then it might be 'chicken', however, I've got a healer and a second warrior on my side. A warrior who is heavily fortified. Yeah, I'm chicken for walking away, and not giving in to your desire to see my life gushing from me, only to be res'd... to watch the beat down that will likely occur. I'm sure he was just whining that I wasn't PVP flagged.

I only do that on accident. Wandering with two level 75+ chars, in a group, toward Undercity, looking for Coins of the Ancients, as a level 15-ish hunter... and some random enemies attack me, and before the group can warn me not to attack them back, I'm dead, and PVP flagged for 5 minutes. And corpse-running, again, and again, and again...

Not to be off topic, but I just started playing recently.

My boyfriend had me on his account trying it out, I got to level 11 rogue, and now I'm signing up for my own account.

Though I'm on one of the "normal" servers, where everyone is extremely nice and helpful and like to give me things and help me fight.

Though it may be because I'm a girl.

Hehe. I play as well, and have currently got 2 level 80 toons. One is a male pally, and the other is a female hunter.

Guess which one gets picked on more.

Now that my lappy is running (relatively) cooler than before, I should try and get back into LotRO; haven't played since.. early last year? XD

Damn, I hate those fuckers! I don't play the game, but most of the spammers and would-be spammers I catch and ban on here are those.

They're getting more cunning too. On another forum I'm on, the "are you a human" test is that you have to PM a mod to get your account activated. Last week three spambots managed to pass that test.

Not to completely derail, but I've seen that going on with other forums as well. Apparently it's a scripted thing- the script generates a spam ID, bounces the 'human check' to someone in china who fills it out, then it goes back to the script.

And I haven't played WoW in years, in large part because of the farmers/blizzard support culture that grew up around it all. Anything I have to do because YOU want me to and not because *I* want to, you need to pay me for ... I'm not going to spend 50 hours a week competing with people who ARE paid to play the game, to hunt drops or gather herbs.

As a former member of the WoW community...

You have barely even scratched the surface of the idiocy that goes on.

And, IIRC, duel-spam can be reported as harassment. You can also block all duel requests.

Really? how do you do that?

Because my boyfriend created a hunter to try and level me up quickly (you get 3x the experience with linked accounts), and no matter what small town I was in, I kept getting dueling requests. Even when I declined, they kept asking.

And it wasn't from people around the same level as I was, but ones that could kill me with one hit. Super annoying.

It's a checkbox in the options panel. Somewhere. Trades and party invites can also be ignored.

And if all else fails, there are probably still addons that do the same thing available on WoWI or Curse. The functionality wasn't originally built in, but Blizzard tends to keep an eye on popular addons and try to integrate similar features to the vanilla client. Making addons possible was a pretty smart move on their part.

To deal with gold seller spam, download a UI mod called BadBoy, it scans incoming whispers and chat messages for weblinks and randomised name strings, if it triggers it, the message is filtered out, and the "report spam" command that is usually done by right-clicking is automatically sent (thus resulting in the offending account being blocked)

As for dealing with random duels, download Minimalist, it is a nifty little program that lets you skip random chatter from NPCs (the extra screen that usually pops up before the vendor window or the flight path window), automatically sells grey quality goods the second that you open a vendor window, and auto-declines duel invitations. (should you wish to duel for some reason, you can turn it off)

If you want to join in with some of your fellow CSers, we have a guild set up on Nagrand server (Oceanic PVE), under the name of "Brain Bleach", drop a whisper to either Isala, Kalthendis, Drocknar or Ascot and just let us know you are from the CS forums

Oh, yeah, so get this... I'm wandering out of Orgrimmar with my newly lvl 61 Warrior, newly respecced to friend's roommate's ungodly suggestion, and a lvl 40 Warlock sends a duel invite. I look at her, and cancel, and she suddenly starts buffing me instead. Uh?

Oh! OH! I was in a group for a run through something in Helfire Peninsula, and a DK summoned his zombie thing... no kidding, it was named Gravekeeper! I took a pic somewhere...

i don't know much about that... use to play eq, and i have no idea we had that ability to block duel requests there. tho i do know if someone kept spamming duels at you, you could call it harassment & file a complaint
