Weird Check Lady

So we're doing this new thing with checks at the grocery store where I work. Now you sign something at the end of the order, and you get your check back, similar to the way walmarts does their checks.

I ask this one lady if she knows we're doing checks electronically. She asks me back if I'm trying to insinuate that she has no funds in her checking account. Of course I say I wasn't, I was only trying to ask if she was aware of the new way we're doing checks. I probably could have worded it better, but that's what I said at the end.

Then later, she says "You have to learn to be nicer to customers, where's your manager?" I just tell her to go to the service desk. As she goes, I mutter under my breath "ok, whatever", and the lady comes back and asks "did you just calll me a bitch?" Of course I never said that. And she only assumed that because she saw me muttering under my breath, so she goes looking for a manager. The one she finds doesn't believe her of course, because he knows I'm not the type of person to say that to a customer (regardless if I think it to myself, or say it to somebody else a couple hours later).

Personally I think that lady was just asking for trouble.

This is why at Walmart, I never tried to warn customers in advance. Most knew already, and for those who didn't, I could simply apologize for any confusion and explain it after the fact. Never had anyone accuse me of insinuating that they didn't have enough money. Had a few complain that they liked the "old way" better, but I just told them to call the head office then.

Some customers act nasty cause they WANT to cause trouble & get off on the chaos that they cause. BUT what's funny is that the more polite you are the angrier they get. Like they want to get a rise out of you & when they see that it aint workin' then they get pissed.
