Trust me when I say that despite what Mythbusters say,
After a particular myth they 'busted', where even I could see what they did WRONG, I only watch to see what they come up with, but I hardly believe any of it now.
The myth was "Shooting a gun into the air will hurt random people as it comes back to earth," they called it Busted, even with... hundreds, maybe THOUSANDS, of people who have actually been wounded by stray bullets in exactly that way. Not to mention, all they did was found a way to make the bullet non-lethal...
"Well, that's where the spin on the bullet stops, so, let's shoot the bullet so it hits that point directly, and doesn't so much as make a puff when it hits the ground."
No, no, no. Bullets are supposed to ARC! No one shoots their gun perfectly 90 degrees to the ground. The spin gives the bullet ballistic force.
    "I call murder on that!"

When people used to smoke by the pumps, I'd tell them that I don't care if they want to commit suicide, but please don't take me with you.

      Yeah.

      I'm bringing disdain back...with a vengeance.

Oh, and your tool box called...you got out again.

They actually called it all three (plausible, busted and confirmed) on that myth. If it's a perfect 90 degree angle, yes, the bullets are not going to do much damage. They even said that it's almost impossible for a human to do it like that.

Yep. They said that you shouldn't fire a gun into the air because there's no way you're going to get that perfect 90 degree angle, and instead you could end up seriously killing someone because of the arc.

I once saw a comic strip detailing a bunch of people who celebrated by firing arrows into the air...

Same idea really, the bullets just tend to land someplace a little ways off...

And yet, there are insurgents blasting whole mags into the air with no apparent effects.... It would be amusing to find out how many got hit by their own celebratory shots, ah, irony is sweet...

YAY Mythbusters!! They TOTALLY busted that "cigarette-lights-the-gas-trail" myth! Cigarettes don't do SHITE to gasoline in liquid form
I put Mythbusters in the same category as Wikipedia. Interesting to see, but I will be fucking damned 50 ways from Sunday before I accept it as a 100% factual source.

Diesel fuel will put out a match or a cig. gas will go up quite nicely.

there will always be a layer of fumes right over the gas.

Once when i was.. 15 or 16 or so I was with my dad he pulls into a station for a fillup.

the guy (someone probably late teens/early 20's) pumping the gas is SMOKING while pumping the gas.

Now my dad didn't say anything so I wasn't sure if he noticed.

We're driving away and I say 'did you see that guy smoking while pumping your gas?' my dad says yes and that he bets we wont see him there again.

Next week, same station... different guy. (and yes i'm aware shifts change etc.) but I nor my dad EVER saw that guy at the station again.

so I figure somebody must have complained or something because he was gone.

Ditto Top Gear; at the petrol station where I work, we've heard the whining excuse, "But I saw it on Top Gear that mobile phones are harmless!" far too many times. I've seen several things on Top Gear that you couldn't pay me to try out in real life. O_O

Also, before everyone starts saying that mobiles are harmless... firstly, it's part of our licence to forbid their usage. Second, it's dropping the mobile that causes a spark; right where the fumes are, on the ground.

Way back when I work in the Auto Safety Recall Office we had reports, and subsequent recall, of some cars spewing out a stream of gas when the gas cap was removed. It would shoot out about 20 feet or so, many times soaking someone in the process. Amazingly, we never had a report of a fire when this happened.

that was the point the myth was if you shot a gun STRAIGHT up into the air it will arc down and kill someone, they proved that it wasnt but it was at an angle.

the only one that pissed me off was when they proved that a soda can couldnt blow up in a car when it was a separate can and they only heated the car to a temp if it was only 100 degrees out side not 115 which happens in Arizona where there are the most exploded can incidents. they didnt have the natural movement of a car the right heat and they didnt test in a 12 pack or 24 for just singles, they didnt even test 6 packs.

                                Danger, Will Robinson!!

                                DON'T F#$K WITH GASOLINE VAPORS!!!!

A single puddle of gas outside in a breeze on a warm day is indeed difficult to light. The light fractions evaporate and dissipate quickly. A TRAIL of gas, and a vehicle actively leaking, are a different matter.

All the time I read stories of mechanics removing gas tanks. A dropped shop light, spark in the next bay, or sometimes "no particular reason" and the entire shop burns to the ground. Sometimes people die ghastly slow deaths from burns.

Another thing is washing garage floors with gasoline. There's a story in the local paper every year; burnt people blown into the street, house engulfed.

Gasoline vapors are heavier than air, and can travel a LONG way to an ignition source. Less than 2% in air is explosive.

This is a case where physical force is justified. Frog march her to the property line after the first warning is ignored.
Suckiness is reinforced up OR down at every transaction. Accepting BS makes them worse for all of us; firm fairness trains them to suck less.
