If someone noticeably ditches their stuff anywhere I can see 'em do it (when I'm on the register), I WILL tell them that they need to give it to me to put away.

When I worked a register I would put on a big shit-eating grin (like ) and politely say "Oh, you can just hand that to me ma'am/sir, I'll take care of it for you"...most of the time they'd just look a little surprised/embarrassed and would hand it to me.
