  • The Devil in the Bookstore

I just had to share this one.

Today, DH agreed to keep an eye on Kitten while I went and ran a few errands. My first errand was to my local bookstore to feed my 3-5 book a week habit.

While browsing the shelves just to the right of the checkout, I overheard this conversation:

    BE: Bookstore employee
    SC: Crazy woman

BE: Good afternoon! Did you find everything ok?
SC: Here, take these books! I cannot believe you sell these here!
BE: Ma'am, did you want to purchase...
SC: NO! I think it's shameful that you sell this here! Do you have no shame?
    BE:
SC: It's bad enough that you sell books on <whispers> s. e. x. </whispers>, but the Devil is real!
BE: I'm sorry you were upset...
SC: I cannot believe you're sellng books about this stuff! I grabbed them all off the shelf and I want you to hide them. My daughter could have been corrupted by the devil...He's real!
BE: Ma'am, would you like to speak to someone?
SC: Well I guess, but you have to promise me that you will go and pull all those shameful books off the shelf before some innocent child reads it and gets sucked into the devils games...he's real you know!
BE: Ma'am, our manager is not in today, but I'll be happy to give you his business card so you can call to discuss this with him.
SC: You really should be ashamed...I'm never shopping here again. I'm only going to buy this other book because my daughter needs it for a school project, otherwise I would not be giving my money to supporters of the devil!
BE: Would you like the number?
SC: Yes, I guess. But I don't understand how you can work at a business that supports the devil's evil plots and corrupts our children!
BE: I'm sorry that you're upset ma'am. Here's the business card for our GM. Your total is $X.XX. Is there anything else I can help you with?
SC: No, that's it. But watch out, the Devil is all over this store...I cannot believe that you sell this stuff. You really must stop at once.
BE: Have a nice day ma'am.

It took everything in me not to walk up to the counter with all my vampire, werewolf and demon fiction just to see the look on that woman's face. I must say that the clerk handled it VERY well.

Inquiring minds must know...did you get a look at exactly what books she brought up? I admire the clerk's restraint, I probably would have been in shock at first and then fled the scene once the crazy started.

I couldn't quite see the desk from where I was standing...the setup makes it hard to see exactly what she handed the clerk. I can only imagine what the books were though...

Well, you know, the Devil is in the details! Don't know why that popped into my head when I read this, but....

Except they should be ashamed for carrying Twilight, but not for the same reason.

Ah crazies: sister of my girlfriend in high school was reading about Wicca, until her step mother saw what books she was getting and pretty much did the Sylvester the cat trick of walking on the ceiling when scared from behind, yeah that did not bode well at all.

I love the way the employee handled by deftly refusing to either honor or refuse her request to remove the books.

Every time the ridiculous request was repeated the employee just politely mentioned that she'd talk to the manager.

                        Nice deflection.

Barbara Hambly has a good vampire series: Those Who Hunt The Night (1989) and Traveling With The Dead (1996).
