Well, if nausea's the issue, it probably doesn't matter if there's shooting or not. It's the motion that does it. I get that watching some FPS games (but not while I'm playing, oddly enough).
I got the same thing back when me and my freinds played flight games... especialy when the camera was locked to the plane rather than remaining upright...

I personally think that the watching/playing discrepancy (which I have heard from a number of people) has to do with the focus a person has when playing. If you're playing: you are focused enough that quick movements and other normally confusing things aren't as much of a problem... in fact, it's gotten to the point that call of duty seems ridiculously fast if I'm watching someone else play, but if I am playing: everything seems to take three times as long to happen.

I cannot play most 3D games, but the first person perspective is the worst. I can't even really watch for very long. When my ex used to play Portal, I'd be doing something on the computer and listening in on the dialogue. The final battle is particularly amusing.
I will not shove “it” up my backside. I do not know what “it” is, but in my many years on this earth I have figured out that that particular port hole is best reserved for emergency exit only. -GK

When you're playing, you're in control. You have an idea of what to expect, so your brain can react quicker. When you're just watching, you don't know if the player is going to suddenly go left or spin in a circle or something. It actually seems similar to me why people who get massively carsick as a passenger (like me) are perfectly fine when they're the one driving.

My hubby has the same problem when I play MYST III or IV. It only takes me a minute or two to readjust to the camera movement after being away a while, but he gets nauseous just attempting to watch me walk around the ages no matter how long he sits there.

Sorry, thanks for playing (I made a pun ), but I don't get motion sick any other time than watching FPS games (not in cars, planes, ships, nothing), and it's not every FPS game. I've actually got it narrowed down to something to do with motion blur and depth of field, since the games that make me sick to watch will also make me a bit queasy if I haven't had anything to eat in a long time, but if I turn off motion blur, it helps.

Fair enough. I only get motion sickness myself when I'm trying to read in a car. I can read on a plane, charter bus, school bus, etc. just fine, but put me in a car and I can't do diddly squat.

I think I'd be dead by now if I couldn't read in a car.
Dead of BOREDOM. Oi. *remembers long car trips with little to do*
