  • Bank Teller Got Upset With Me

I think this was more irratating than sucky, because it bothers me when you know that a policy is supposed to be the same for each store and followed by each employee and it just doesn't happen.

I was depositing my paycheck. I needed the funds sooner than the 3-5 days, so I asked if I could cash it, then deposit it as cash. The girl said no problem, she could do that as I was a bank customer and as it was a paycheck.

The next paycheck, I attempted to do the same thing, had my deposit slip filled-out for cash, and went to the guy at the counter. I said what I wanted to do... And he looked confused. He said they don't do that. I said that --- 2-weeks ago said it could be done for the above reasons. He said he'd check with a Manager. As he turns to go down the counter, the girl in the next window says very snappishly (to me and him)

"No, we DO NOT do that because of (insert policy here)"

I said "Oh, well I thought because the girl did it for me last time..."

"Well! Was it ----? SHE does not work here anymore!" And she ROLLED her eyes at me, huffed, and went back to her Customer. Yes, she was like that in front of a Customer.

Ok, now I understand. She could have just said that they don't do that and that the girl last time made a mistake (the guy went and confirmed this with a manager). But DO NOT act like it is my fault for unknowingly asking you to do something that had been done for me before at your bank!

I saw red when she spoke to me that way, and was half-way tempted to say something to her privately. But I decided against it. Now I know what I have to do if I want my check deposited as cash, the first time was a fluke, and the other girl was fired. Maybe the snappy girl had a bad day. Still, you represent a bank, maybe a little professionalism and remember that maybe the customers are not trying to make your life harder on purpose.

P.S. The girl who originally cashed the check I believe had originally done things not in policy, and also tended to make decisionas for the customers because she thought her way was better; like not giving me my cash back because "you can use our ATM for free." Uh, no, I'd like my money now please.

I do that at my bank all the time. They're happy to let me cash the cheque and deposit either a certain amount or the entire thing.

Which bank is this? A National Bank or a local one?

You should have said something, and this is exactly what it should have been.

I don't know what it is with bank people. You mostly get some super nice tellers, but the ones that aren't REALLY aren't.

I had one, a manager even, I overhead saying "well if they don't like it they can bank at another branch." Right there in front of everyone. So I said. "Great idea. I think I'll do just that. In fact, I'll go one better and go to a completely different bank chain." And I closed my account right then and there in front of everyone.

There's more to the story, but that's the gist of it.

I don't know what makes some of these rude tellers/bank managers forget that that is an option.

Reminds me of the time I got a teller into trouble

Shortly after starting college, my father and I went into the local bank to ask a few questions. Mainly, if my ATM card would work there. Keep in mind that I was about 50 miles from home, and didn't want to pay fees. Also keep in mind that a family friend works there...

As we're asking the questions, the teller soon got bored, and copped an attitude. She went from reasonably nice, to downright rude. In other words, she was upset because we were "wasting her time" and preventing her from staring out the window Now, I don't know about you, but I don't take shit from anyone. Especially from someone who is upset that I actually made her do the job she was hired for.

I still got the last laugh though. As we're on the way out, we catch the eye of our family friend. Someone that my grandmother has known for 40-odd years, and who has always said "if you ever need anything," or was always willing to help out the family. Nice guy, who also doesn't take shit from anyone. Er, did I mention that he was one of the senior VPs? One who, is in charge of the entire main floor.

I'm sure you all saw where this was going, but to make a long story short...that teller no longer works there. Seems that she'd been the subject of more than a few complaints...and mine was the one that got her fired. Take that, bitch

To the OP I would have demanded the supervisor right then and there to deal with that bitch. You are not entitled to my business and you damn well better treat me nice if you want to keep it. Being a bank and how a lot of banks are going under in the US you better be trying to keep your customers.

This is why I love credit unions... less stupid rules to deal with... payroll checks are available instantly when deposited (or would be if I didn't have direct deposit )
When I was with Ze evIl ONionS Bank (reads the capital letters ) I remember a lot of stupid rules, but I don't think that was one of them... besides, I'm the smart ass who would if needed cash the check, walk around to the back of the line and come up to do a separate transaction to deposit it, and they knew it, which may be why they never questioned me doing it the OP's way

Yeah, you would HOPE it's that way with CU's. But not always. I had been with one for 20 years, at first it was great -- they actually acted like I was a part-owner of the credit union (which is how they really are). But over time they got bigger and bigger, and started acting like they were doing me a favor letting me keep my money there. Finally, I got fed up when they started acting like a BANK. I switched to another credit union, and once again am treated like someone that really matters.

I consider myself lucky to be with the CU I'm with. The staff is great, and there's even one German lady who used to work at the branch my dad does his stuff at. She trnasferred over to the branch I visit for some reason. My first time I made a deposit, she saw the last name on the check and asked me if I'm related to <father's name> She's the only one who doesn't check my ID because of my connections.

When I got my wallet stolen, I was without ID for a few weeks. I made sure that when I deposited my check, that I would get myself in her line because I wasn't sure how likely I would have gotten my banking needs done on just a paper id with no picture.

Mr. Hero, that reminds me of one of the things I like about my CU. The branch I use I don't need my ID or even my account number I walk up and they remember me and already have my account information up. One of the ladies there doesn't even have to ask me whether I'm putting into checking or savings... she knows by which day it is which account I'm putting it in (if it's a payday it's into checking, any other day the vast majority of the time it's going into savings).

Well in that case you didn't get her in trouble. She got herself in trouble for not doing her job. In the majority of cases where someone gets fired they ended up firing themselves for incompetence or insubordination.

What if you cashed the check, walked out came back five mins later and deposited it? I don't really understand why they couldn't cash it and then deposit it. I know checks have to clear and all that but if they are willing to cash it why not just stick it in your account?

I know there are rules and policies for everything but they were jerks about it too.

See thats just plain freaking rude.

The first rule i was taught when i began my training at the bank is the Cohen-Brown rule - Never expect or assume customers know anything about banking products, services or regulations. (I can't remember their exact phrasing).

Now sure, when we get people who don't even understand the concept of an overdraft we may laugh at them on mute, but NEVER to their face. Thats just poor service and work ethic.

I think bank staff can easily get jaded...you deal with some truely sadening situations all the time - i've seen people with nothing having to take money from their kids accounts (under 18 the parents generally control the account) just to feed them (i sometimes followup out on morbid curiousty and see the transaction record of them buying food).

The bank I work for places "holds" on the availability of checks that are cashed the same way it does deposited ones.

That is, if you have a 3k check, you only have an average of 150 in the account for the last 6 months, the last check you deposited bounced and you've gone into the red 7 times and try to cash a check, our computer won't let you. It will want to put the same hold on funds that it would if you were depositing it, and if you don't have 2900 in the bank your fskd.
However, if your account is in good standing it doesn't make a difference if you deposit the check with cash back or cash it and put some money in, the funds will be available this second either way. (nice thing about big banks, good computer systems)

I've had people cash checks then deposit the money, I try to tell them nicely that it doesn't matter if they do it that way or if they just deposit the check, it will just make less work for both of us if we deposit it straight.

Also if you have a local paycheck that we recognize we'll take the hold off without you even asking, even if you were a few hundred in the hole before you came in to deposit. We know that Wal-Mart, Target, Geiko, Denny's, the regional garden supply store and the local school district are good for the money. However the local Baskin-Robins franchise keeps bouncing there paychecks, poor girls.

of course we've been taken over by an even bigger bank, so I don't know how long these policies will last. It's almost worth it to see my manager wearing a tie everyday tho!

In my experience , usually they only let you take out money if it's available in your account already.

i.e. If you have a $100 in your account and deposit a $300 check, the bank will let you deposit $200 worth and get the rest back as cash. But if you have no money in your account, you can't do that.
