  • Age limits on pizza?

I was traveling home from a friends place this past week... I left stupidly early and by the time I had to wait for my transfer, I was one hungry Mei. I was surrounded by every kind of burger-slop I could imagine, all of which I knew would make one sad Mei tummy... so I figured BigPizzaHouseChain couldn't be that bad.

I checked out the board outside before I went in to order, totaling up how much different orders would be since I was a little low on cash. I noticed they had a kids meal which featured a personal pan pizza and a drink, for pretty cheap. Score. I'm getting a kids meal. I hop onto the line and wait. I finally get to the counter and ask for a kids meal, cheese pizza, with a fruit juice or fruit punch (they didn't list the drinks on the board out front. ><; I figured they must have some kind of juice..) The following happened..

    Me: The wonderfully bugged me.
    PW: Pizza woman
    PW2: Pizza woman...2!

Me: Hiya.. can i have a kids cheese pizza meal, with a juice or fruit punch?
PW: You can't order the kids meal.
    Me: o.O? Uhh..
PW: Under 12 only! What do you want?
Me: ....a kids cheese pizza meal...
PW: You are not 12. *walks away*
So.. I stood there for a second, until PW2 shows up
PW2: Can I take your order?
Me: *repeats order of a kids cheese meal with a juice*
PW2 groans, punches in the order
PW2: Juice not included with the meal. What drink?

I ask about a fruit punch, a lemonade, or an iced tea, she rolls her eyes and pours me my drink, telling me my total. I hand her my money and she flings my change and my order at me, and walks away. I took my order and went to eat, wanting to get out of there as fast as possible.

    Mebbie I was a little sucky not knowing which drinks they had, but they werent posted ><;; Just because I'm old I can't enjoy a kids meal? ; ;

The local Chinese place has a "kids" meal - 1/2 pt pork fried rice, 3 chicken fingers, and some spare ribs. It's crept up from $2.50 to $3.75 since I started going there, but that's not bad over a 14 year span. I also get the big kids' meals at burger joints, since I have a small stomach and I give the toys to my kids. I have never gotten attitude like that. In my eyes, that was more than complaint-worthy.

How did they know you weren't ordering for a kid in the bathroom?

Because a lot of people are assholes.

I order off the kids menu at certain restaurants all the time. Mostly because I don't like those restaurants but everyone else in the car wanted to go (like McDonalds... or Burger King... not my cup o' tea I'm afraid). Or if I'm not very hungry (like ordering from the Cracker Barrel menu, holy crap, those meals are HUGE).

Actually, restricting the kids meals to actual kids isn't uncommon, especially in places with a sit-down. There's almost no profit on those for them, and they only offer them to get families in, who will order meals for the adults as well, and maybe dessert. Similar thing with seniors discounts. It's a move to get more butts in the seats. So really, they should have just said "sorry, kids meals are only available to children under 12" rather than snapping at you. Bad attitude on their part.

I could understand at a sit-down full restruant place.. not so much at a fast food in and out type place where I could have come in to order for a sibling/child.

and, nowhere was it posted that there was a age limit for a "kids" meal.. it just was labeled as such...My mommy tells me I'm a 20 year old kid! Does that count?

well its not the most honest thing to do, but in future tell them you ARE ordering for a kid (thats only gonna work if you are using take out of course) if they put up a fuss.

I used to do that back in the day when I a. ate maccas and b. they didn't want to sell happy meals to adults.

Beat me to it. Nothing like having a six-person table occupied by two seventeen-year-olds gabbing for hours and running up a bill of *gasp* $9.92. "Oh, and don't worry about the change," they'll say, as they deposit a $10 bill in your hand, "You were such a great server, you earned it. *smilesmile*"

How the words "Assault On A Minor" haven't wound into my criminal record I'll never know.

But on the flips side, I've never been mean about it. I'll politely inform a table of this policy. In all honesty, they usually get up and walk out (due to the fact that the kids menu was all they could afford, down to the cent). It's never anyone who needs to eat and just can't afford it, either. It's always well-fed teenagers trying to stretch their weekend allowance just a little bit further...at my expense.

and to be honest... in most places, the Kids mean is the actual single serving size.

i know it's that for happy meals.

I like the kids meals better... And also total in agreeance with PepperElf. Did you know the supersized pop at McD's is almost 2 liters depending on the ice content?

Cracker Barrel doesn't mind if adults order from the kid's menu, I think it says something about "smaller appetites". Garfield's let you order, but you have to pay $1 more (not a problem for me.

I always get kid's meals at fast food restaurants and I either return the toy or give it to a kid in the restaurant.

What did you think it's called a "kids meal" for? If it was simply a smaller meal, they'd call it "small meal". The age limit IS there - right in the meal name. You're not a kid, so you don't get to order it.

Although, as BJ said, there are definitely MUCH politer ways to inform you than what you got! They definitely had attitude.

This discussion of how to order a meal you're not entitled to ... not bordering on being sucky customers are we...?

But the "adult" meals are too big at times. I can't finish a whopper, fries, and a drink anymore. Hell I can barley finish a whopper and drink. Buying the whopper JR, drink sometimes comes to more then what the kids meal is and the kids meal gets a fruit.

Where I work we're told not to allow kid's meals to adults. The kid's menu isn't on the same menu as the regular one and is only for under 12's. We can get written-up for allowing a kid's meal to an adult. So I could understand their reluctance to sell it to you.

Still no need for an attitude. Nothing wrong with them mentioning something along the same sort of size/price range and making everyone happy.

Also, it depends on the manager. When the local Ben and Jerry's first opened up, the manager there made me order a regular sized cone or dish every time, and that is too much ice cream for me. Since he was often the only worker there, I got the regular. Now, since he's gone, I order kiddie sized dishes and I'm happy.
