I really think restaurants need a "kids" meal (for actual kids), a "small" meal (that's the actual serving size [i.e. kids meal sans "kids" name + $1 or so], then the regular meals.

Even at the pizza place I worked at -- many adults asked if there was a kids meal, not for a kid but for their own lunch as our "small" was too big (yet the "slice" was the same price as a small about (well, like 1/2 price...), yet you got like 4-6times more in a small than a slice...).
My one friend's time at a fast food joint said he had more adults asking for the kdis meal for them than they did for kids! (I think they charged like $1 or so more for adults eating it - but only if they were just ordering that).

More and more we are coming around on the serving sizes issue. People are realising they don't want the biggest drink, the largest steak, a massive pile of fries. The health conscious among us are starting to be heard in bulk.

By all means express your desires along these lines to the servery in question. "I would like a SMALL plate please" or something like that. At one place I frequent, I ask for "half as much meat as you usually give". Sometimes they discount me for it, sometimes they don't. That's fine - I'm happy with the meal price, and I can't eat that excess. I'd prefer to pay less, certainly, but since they don't offer it as an option, I think it's better to pay full price and have less on the plate than either pay full price and throw half of it away or pay full price and eat more than I need/want.

But don't ask for children's meals if you're not a child. That's like sharing plates at a buffet or sharing the one refillable cup amongst five people.

I can understand the policy on kids meals at sit down restaurants; but, if it was a fast food restaurant (McDonald's, Burger King) then it wouldn't make sense to me at all. Does that make any sense?

OK I am food lady @ my 2nd job--BK--and we really don't care what you order as long as you pay for it & don't throw it on the floor. There was no reason for those pizza slingers to get an attitude. What, were they gonna ID you?? I've never had a problem ordering a kid's meal anywhere, not ever. If they had said no in a nice way, fine. But never a problem. So come to my store.

We only have one actual Kid drink. The Kid's Cocoa. It's the same size as the small adult hot chocolate (12oz). The only differences are that it's served at a lower temperature suitable for little mouths, and instead of shaved chocolate on the whipped cream, we put on crushed oreos. If you want to swap the shavings for cookies on the adult cocoa, that's fine. So the only real differences are the temperature, and the price. (About a dollar)

I couldn't tell you how often teenagers order the kid drink. I don't care. You want lukewarm hot chocolate, go for it. What I will NOT do is let people order the kid drink at the adult temperature. That's just trying to get the adult drink at the kid price and I say no, you suck. The only exception for me is if a parent is ordering a drink for a kid they have to TAKE the drink to and they ask for it hotter so it will be the right temp when they get it to them. I can accept that.

I had one woman pissed at me because the kid she was with (don't know if he was hers) tried to order the kid cocoa extra hot. Now this kid was at least twelve and paying himself. Quite old enough for an adult drink, thank you. I explained that the kid cocoa extra hot WAS an adult cocoa. He was ok with it. I asked which topping he would prefer. He wanted the shaved chocolate. It was the WOMAN that was pissed that I charged him the adult price. So he chooses a drink that's the same size as the adult drink, the same temperature as the adult drink and the same toppings as the adult drink...and she's pissed that I charged him the adult price.

Or another lady a long time ago that ordered a kid's cocoa, skim, no whip...and wondered why she got something cold and watery...

What did you think it's called a "kids meal" for? If it was simply a smaller meal, they'd call it "small meal". The age limit IS there - right in the meal name. You're not a kid, so you don't get to order it.
Ok, by your logic, if mom, dad, sibling, etc., is at MickeyDs, BK, etc., and getting food for several people, including a kid that's not with them, that the employees shouldn't sell them the kids' meal.

I had a friend in college that always ordered a Happy Meal and never once had a problem. I've ordered of the kid's menu lots of time (sit-down and take-away) and never had a problem.

It all depends on what toy it is.

I've never tried ordering a kid's meal, but many times I will order ala carte instead of a full dinner, if it is available, which is usually in Mexican restaurants. That way I get the basics of the meal and none of the side dishes that I usually don't eat anyway. It seems like the older I get, the bigger the meals are.

Sometimes the items on the kids menu are absolutely amazing, yet also not availble on the regular menu.

For example, Outback Steakhouse has mac&cheese. They are the most yummy mac&cheese ever, and its a damn huge plate....but its on the kids menu. It doesn't exist on the regular menu. Its also great if you're not quite hungry enough to eat a full steak meal.

Now you're being pedantic. We've established why stores have that policy. Stop arguing it. It's the policy. The issue is the attitude of the place in enforcing it.

and to be honest... in most places, the Kids mean is the actual single serving size.

i know it's that for happy meals.
I've read that back when McD's first opened, the standard meal was the exact size that the Happy Meals are now.

And for some reason, I want chicken nuggets...and I'm not especially fond of chicken nuggets.

im on the fence on this for years os i came up with a personal guide line.
Sit down resturants, where your being seated and are taking up a table for any ammount of time, no, besides the menu says thats its a no.
                          fastfood its ok.
bigpizzaplace is one of those places where i would get the kids meal too.
if your on a diet almost every diet book/plan/people say you should do kids meals instead of full sized meals because of the portion size
besides some kids meals are too big for kids by them selves.
