We had so many problems with noisy neighbors when we lived in apartment complexes and I work third shift too. One thing that helpe is running an air filter or a fan for white noise. The best decision we ever made was to move into a house in a quiet neighborhood.

That's what I'm eventually going to have to end up doing, boringscreenname.

I mean, the old woman downstairs will not tolerate a peep after dark, but she can be as noisy as she wants. And don't ANYONE go thinking elderly people cannot be noisy bad neighbors. They can be just as loud as college kids and crazy twacked out drug addicts. It's just that not many of them are that way. SHE is.

Just like the title of this thread, it's about consideration. As I've stated time and time again, I do NOT expect total silence during the day. That will never happen. But I would like a little respect for my own comfort, the same respect that is DEMANDED of me at night time. I'm not going to get any respect for consideration. Therefore, I'm done. I'm not about to buy a drum set or start having screaming sex, but I am done walking on eggshells.

Oh how true this is! One of my worst offending noisemakers were a elderly mother/daughter team. Oy! from sunup to sundown these two would be screaming bloody hell at each other but in whatever language (i believe it was persian...not sure) It sounded like two pitbulls in a vicious fight! I, too, am a night owl and between them and the neighbors below (mom and daughter were down and across) playing their thumping mexican music (nationality referenced only for type of music...you know with all the accordians and oompa! oy...) I rarely got to sleep past 6am! At least both neighbors were very nice and cordial when you actually saw them.

Now I have my own house! and the only major thing I had to have? NO CONNECTING WALLS TO OTHER HOMES!!!! yay!

This thread reminds me of something that recently happened to a good friend of mine, only he was on the receiving end of a noise complaint. He went on vacation to Disney World with his girlfriend recently after stopping in another state for his girlfriends sisters wedding. The total trip was just over two weeks. When he came home he noticed two letters from the management of his townhouse complex regarding anonymous noise complaints about him. He lives in a corner unit and thereforce only has one neighbor, who was the one who complained. He went to the managers office and explained that they'd been on vacation and management basically told them it was that neighbor and to forget about it and they were sorry for the misunderstanding. The next day after my friend came home from work (dressed in his usual business suit) confronted the neighbor who was obviously shocked and mortified about being called out and approached by a professional looking person but denied everything and said they hadn't heard anything or complained. What exactly were they complaining about? It couldn't have been about the neighbor on the other side because in addition to "loud music" referenced in the complaint it mentioned their dog, which the other neighbor doesn't have and the dog was at my friends parents for the two weeks.

Back in 1980 I broke my back and neck, and was stuck in a selection of casts and external fixation, and a traction bed. Because it was apparently the busy seaon, I got stuck into a room with some old bat. She had paid the subscription for the television so she had control of what was watched. So here I am at the age of 19, stuck with an old bat who woke up at 8 am, did breakfast and then watched talk shows game shows and soap operas until about 6 at night. I couldnt listen to my radio because then SHE couldnt hear her programming. At 6 they fed us, then at about 630 her little old lady friends came over, and talked until visiting hours were over at 10. I couldnt listen to my radio becaus ethey wouldnt be able to hear each other talking.

OK, I can read ... except I cant hold a book. I could sleep, except for the loud drivel of either talk shows, game shows soap operas or their innane chatter about said talk shows, game shows, soap operas and people I didnt even know or care about.

I told my doctor to get me out of there or I would go insane, but he didnt believe me until he came in randomly to hear me getting shrieked at for being too loud. I was laying there doing nothing. Literally, my bed was flipped so I was laying mostly face down [so I wouldnt get bed sores] The noise they complained about? I sneezed

I got moved to a private room after that.

I assume that every apt building has one of these women???? we called ours the Screamer. I know one buillding we lived in did. the only bad things was she liked the real early morning hours (around 5 or 6 am)
My end of the building where everyone else's decks are (that space on ground level is a driveway of sorts) has some weird acoustic property whereby if my window is open, any sound from the floors above filters down to me as if it was in the same room. I think my Screamer is on the third floor. No end of fun especially in the summer when everyone's windows are open.

I have a new neighbour, I live in a unit that is one of 5. we are in a u shape, and the neighbour right next door and i share a wall.. (everyone else has a garage between their actual living space..)..

anyhoo., this social reject thinks he is the new Hendrix and likes to play his guitar, (with amp mind you), along with the Beatles, Hendrix, Hot Chocolate.. or whomever tickles his fancy.... he also, likes to crank up his music, or tv so loud, that I can no longer hear my own... I can be in my bedroom, two rooms away from our shared wall, and still feel the base from his stereo in my chest...

Where we live, everything is magnified, any little sound in the courtyard is tripled, so you can understand when this guy has his windows, and door open, and music blaring how pissed off I get..

I dont want to be one of those whiney neighbours, 'hey you, keep it down..' I am not an old woman, I appreciate loud music, just as much as the next person..

Which is why the last time he blasted his Queens Greatest Hits album so loud my sleeping hubby who works night shift was driven out of bed, and my chest was throbbing like no tomorrow.. I turned on my stereo and played Korns first album as loud as my stereo would go... my neighbour quickly turned his stereo off, and left.. I went about my housework and remembered how much I love that album!!

Things have been somewhat quieter ever since, and if he pisses me off again, the passive agressive bitch in me still has plenty of metal ready to play!

P.S.. I am a big fan of Queen, the Beatles and all the other artists I mentioned, which pisses me off more, cos this new guy is making me resent them!
"You're perfect yes it's true, but without meeeee you're only you!"

Most of my neighbors are pretty quiet. The most noise we get...is when some idiot drives around with his bass on (usually in some shitbox Cavalier or Civic) at night. I mean, if you're going to drive around, at least put some decent (aka *not* hip-hop or (c)rap) and get a decent car. I guess I don't understand the point of turning the bass all the way up and the treble all the way down. If I want my car to "thump," I'll jam a screwdriver into the exhaust

With that said, I'm surprised nobody's complained about the MG yet. It has an exhaust that's a bit loud--gotta love those "glass-packs." That is, it only has a single muffler at the rear, and tends to roar! I've been told that you can hear it fire up about 3-4 houses away But, since I don't fire it up at night, nobody's complained. Even if they did, there's not much they can do about it.

I find noisy neighbors both annoying and amusing at the same time. I had an immigrant couple for downstairs neighbors once who argued constantly and loudly, but they were from a country in East Asia (Korea, I think), and they both had rather high-pitched voices. When they argued, they did so in their native language, and my roommates and I decided that they sounded like dolphins chittering.

My problem now is the smoker downstairs. She's not supposed to smoke inside, but she does anyway, and the smell creeps up through the walls and comes into my apartment in the pantry, the closet, and under the bathroom sinks. I don't smoke. In fact, my wife is pregnant while I'm being tested for cancer recurrence. Cigarette smoke is one of the last things I want to be subjected to in my own home. Management says they're trying to get her to smoke outside with "compliance notices," but it doesn't seem to be working. Meanwhile, she complains that we "need to stop walking around" because it bothers her. I didn't think we were heavy walkers. The last neighbor never said a word.

ironically tho music wasn't much of an issue. ... i don't recall hearing much of that. then again i was too busy noticing the noises from fighting couples / domestic violence, Orgasm Girl, and the lady with bowling balls for feet.
I can relate to every one of those. Our orgasm girl was funny. She sounded like a chihuahua doing a wolf imitation. I only had one heavy walker, but he also really liked to use the vacuum... at least three times a day.

The domestic violence one was the interesting one, though, because it was my roommate and me who finally got it stopped. One night, I heard this from next door...

                          Male: *grumble mumble*
                          Female: You shut up!
                          Male: *mumble growl* *SLAP!*
Female: Ow! I can't believe you just hit me!
                          Male: *grumble* *SLAP!*
Female: You hit me again! I just don't believe it!
(Roommate calls the police. Police show up, get the story from us, and knock on neighbor's door. Neighbor doesn't answer. Police talk to manager. Manager gives them permission to break down the door because the fighting neighbors had not returned the spare keys.)
                          Police: *KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*
                          Male: *grumble?*
Police: *CRASH!* Police! On the ground now! Get your hands where I can see 'em!

Turns out the guy was running a meth lab. He was arrested, and she moved out the next day.

Ok, I have to ask; How could your whole apartment complex not know that? Meth labs are notoriously noxious.

                              oooo.

that might explain why my neighbors are all so quiet in the apartment complex. The apartment itself however has "extra quiet" rule in effect from 11pm to 6 or 7am I think.

hmmm, meth lab? in a way i'm not totally surprised.

When Mom & Dad first moved into an apartment, they had one with a good amount of space but crappy managers. One manager was fired for taking the residents' rent to a casino (and losing)... another one started removing the "no pet" restrictions, and extensive advertising in some of the worst parts of town.

so they started getting residents who were noisy, tweens & teens who'd scream to their friends etc, and (the worst of the bunch) known drug dealers. Mom says the cops use to drive through the area just for a break... now they say the manager has single-handedly trashed the area. The manager of course says the cops are all crooked and that he himself has a "handle" things with regard to crime. (sounds more like he has hand IN the crime to me).

The one she's in now is a bit nicer. No pets, and stricter rules on noise. but her neighbors are all nosey from what i've been told.

that's why i like the one i'm in now.... not much noise, cops swing through on a regular basis (mostly because the main road thru the complex is a nice short cut)

I think it would do a lot of good if there were apartments/rental places specifically for people who work odd hours. Not even necessarily JUST overnights, anyone who works a shift that ISN'T your typical 7-3/8-4/9-5.......I think there would be a lot less neighbor grievances and petty arguments.....in my opinion, people who work odd shifts are...I don't want to say discriminated against....but almost that much so....we are truly set up for complaints and grievances because we end up being "stuck" living by normal/day people who have zero tolerance for our nocturnal way of life, even if we go out of the way to try to make things quiet for them, they don't do anything for us because it's not "normal" to be up at night.
