well... be very careful about blocking myspace cos i know what will happen.... what happened to my second ship.

people started using hacking sites to circumvent the blocks and picked up viruses to the ship's computers.

admins won the fight because... hey it's the military and they can punish you for breaking the rules (rules that you have to physically actually sign that you've read and understand)

not sure if the library will be allowed to flex the authority THAT much
Damn, that sucks. I was going to agree with the suggestions to block MySpace from library computer services. They can use email like the good ol' days. Last time I tried studying at the library, I was disturbed not only by some 30-something failure at life playing WoW on his laptop and voice chatting, but a half-dozen teenage twats playing on MySpace and then snickering to each other and asking questions about what girls they've sent messages/comments to. Not that I don't utilize the evil MySpace on occasion; it's how I keep in touch with a lot of my friends, but when these idiot kids get obsessed with it . . . ugh.

I guess the "sweet darlings" don't have computers at their house?

My guess is their computer privileges were "taken away", or that one of their parents probably threw the computer out the window in a drug induced rage one night.

They knew people were inside, and somehow this made breaking the glass a GOOD idea? Not that it would be a good idea any other time, but that just makes them especially stupid.

If i were a librarian there, I think I would adjust the content filters to block myspace on all the computers, just to see what happens.
I still like this idea.... at our library you have to use your card # to log into the computers and there is a "contract" you agree to every time you log in stating I won't do this or that... blah blah. They keep records of where you go...more or less...if you go somewhere you are not supposed to....oh...say....XXX (enter porn site here) they will give you a warning.... do it too many more times... you get ban from the computers...... I dont know how many other libraries do this... but if they do...then making MySpace a prohibited site wouldn't be a big problem...

All and all, I think I'll put this on my list of reasons that I never want kids.
That's the problem. The sensible people who'd raise kids right are so horrified at today's generation that they have few or no kids. The idiots who don't give a rat's arse what their brats do breed like cockroaches. Idiocracy is a prophecy!
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

I and my fellow computer lab babysitters have been begging for that very thing for YEARS. Unfortunately, there's this thing called censorship which is very, very bad and evil and our library will not be a part of it! That and the director is all kinds of spineless. While I hate blanket punishments and would feel (a little) bad for the people who use MySpace, but follow all our rules, we've had enough problems involving that site that if it were up to me, I'd have blocked it from the get go.

Worse...The computers are programmed to shut themselves off ten minutes before closing, so library staff don't have to tell people verbally to get off the computers and leave already. So even if they did succeed in breaking into the library and getting to a computer, they'd have no way to access it.

                <SNIP>

Then again, they were stupid enough to try to break into a building with a witness sitting on a bench less than 20 feet away from them...I wouldn't put it past them to go back to the library while it's open like nothing happened.
We have a similar system that won't allow people to log in after closing time until 15 minutes before opening. 'Tis nice. Our old system didn't do that.

I'd almost bet money that the little hooligans will be back in the morning. Some time ago I got threatened by this little wannabe punk and was told that if I ever saw him again to get security right away and they'd call the police. Who did I see the very next time I was working? Little wannabe punk. I swear people are so stupid. Our system allows us to see which card number is logged into which computer and then we can use the number to access their records. So, chances are, we know your name (or your friend's name if you're using the friend's card. Double no-no).

We have the same thing. I've had a few people get snippy with me when I've busted them for using multiple cards that belong to friends and/or family. I had one bright one call his buddy for the buddy's card number and password right in front of me. I love telling them that they are allowed to use their card and their card only as stated in the terms of use they agreed to at the log-in screen.

We have the computers for the adults and there's a small section for the children in the library by my house. The thing is both computers have filters on them, but I don't think you can really do much on the kiddy computers. Not only that but you had to punch in a code to get on and it gave you a limit of 3x a day to login in the computer and that's it (in 60 minute increments at the most . During the times I was down and out before I got my laptop and such, I had to make a mad dash to the library to do anything online to get a spot when it opened. Otherwise it would be jam packed with tweens and teens from my vicinity that are there half the time for MySpace or any other frivolities. I hope those kids get caught and taught a VERY hard lesson on this.
