I've had cashiers clear age restricted items from their station before, even in WM sometimes, so that may be location to location as far as whether or not that happens. I'm CLEARLY over 21, although I never complain if asked for ID (I've read too many stories on here, and don't want to be one of "them"). I had pushed the debit button already, and entered my PIN, so I don't know what the snafu was. As I mentioned earlier, maybe she was just having a bad day.

I very occasionally use a self-checkout; only when I have a very simple transaction and not more than a few items. If I have coupons I don't bother. It's more trouble than it's worth, for me. I actually would rather wait on line and let a cashier do it.
I discovered recently that Wegmans has a scale in the produce section that allows you to print a barcode for your produce...just put it on the scale and enter the item number from the sticker. Makes checking out that much quicker
