Something odd is going on in this fair city tonight...

At last count, rumor has it, 5 hotels have been robbed in the city tonight. They are relatively near-by our location.

Every hotel is on edge. A competitive hotel's manager who's hotel got hit came to speak with us to make sure we are okay. Also decided to make sure we knew emergency procedure. Duh. I have worked here over 7 years, and this manager was maybe MAYBE my age (27). I have done every traning thing our hotel wants us to do. I told the guy we have it under control.

Our sister hotel, bearing the same name but ending in "Suites" called to make sure we are okay.

    The cops are a buzz.

A guest just checked in here at 2amish. He was pulling off the exit & was pulled over by a group of cop cars. He said they had guns in his face and the cops were freaking out asking him all sorts of questions, including if he was alone.

The people who are reported to be robbing places, and yes it's a group, include 1 woman and a group of men. First reports said it was only 1 black woman 1 black man (the police called the hotel & told me to look out for exactly those descriptions only). The competitive hotel manager said they were young people, and the girl was caught and she was 16 maybe. Nice....

So said guest who said the cops like threw their guns in his face & stuff? Yeah, he smells greatly of alcohol when he checked in. He said he had just rolled up into town... Already smelling of drinking? Um... Then he couldn't figure out how to use his key to get into the building.

    so...fun....

I don't think there's anything wrong with other hotels checking in with you and making sure you're ok and know what to do.

That's what we did when two guys were on a small gas station robbing spree a few years back, when I still worked at the gas station. They had already hit a few stores, and they were only robbing smaller gas stations/convenience stores....the kind where only 1 or maybe 2 people are working at a time.

Thankfully, they were caught eventually. But I swore one night, they stopped at my station after I closed and were going to try something. That car matched the description..the way the car was just idling there in the middle of the road made me really nervous......so I picked up the phone and made sure they saw me doing it through the window, and off they sped.

Back when I worked in pizza, I was friends with a couple of people at our competition.

When their drivers got robbed, I called to make sure they were okay. And likewise, when one of our drivers got hit, I called the competing stores to let them know what happened, where it happened, and the description of the customers.

      They always seemed grateful.

My issue wasn't with that manager checking up on us or letting us know what was going on. It was that he assumed that since he didn't train his people right that we weren't trained either...that is what bothered me. That & I am pretty sure I had been in hotels longer then he had.

I never really understood why anyone would choose to rob a hotel or motel. (not that I condone or understand robbing anyplace) How much cash do they really have on hand? Seems to me that most people use credit cards for hotels these days.

          Or am I mistaken?

We don't. I mean, not really. 95% of our business is through credit cards only. AND we are required to keep up on our deposits. Well...I do work for a higher end hotel so perhaps we are just better lol
