Believe me, I do. We've got mostly swamp (evaporative) coolers here, and after a while, that pads that go in it start to grow algae that smells. I'm the first one that can smell that the pads in the cooler need changing....

Well there's your problem. You should try some better beer. Try local breweries if you have them (there should be at least one micro brew in your region).

I'm surprised you can smell the alcohol in beer. While the smell of cheap beer is bad, and stale beer is even worse, I've never been able to smell the alcohol in beer.

I'll drink some Mexican beers, like Dos Equis (although they've got the most ridiculous commercials). Mostly though, it's the Scottish, Irish, and English that I like.

Curious. Are you from the US? Because to me a statement like that is like saying "I don't like any books. They're missing...something". Contrary to popular belief, the US does actually produce some of the best beer in the world, and we brew a huge variety of styles. It's just that the good stuff usually doesn't leave the US and most people outside of the US consider Budweiser to be typical of an american beer, which is patently untrue especially in the northeast and northwest. The best US brewed beer outside of the US that I've seen is plain ol' Sam Adams Boston Lager, which while decent, is still miles away from the regional brewers in the US (the special Sam Adam's brews are pretty good tho).

Go to Philadelphia or Portland if you want a good idea of how good US beers can be (Portland has a lot of brew pubs and micro brews, Philadelphia has a few excellent micro brewers but brings in a huge variety of beer from all over the world, reportedly there's a larger variety of Belgian beers on tap in Philadelphia than there is in Brussels).

As much as I don't like to, I gotta say that Budweiser is a very high quality beer. Sure, it lacks any sort of character, and basically tastes like water gone bad, but in terms of brewing a consistent product, they do an excellent job. They deserve at least some respect for that.

Yes CAMRA pubs are great. When I visit my sister that's the only pubs we go to. I wish the US brewed more British style cask ales. You can find them, but they're not that common - we're just starting get over our obsession with high hop, high alcohol IPAs.

I have a fondness for Blue Moon Ale myself. Their year round brew is Belgian White, but I usually get their seasonal varities: Rising Moon, Honey Moon, Harvest Moon and Full Moon. This is a Canadian ale.

I also like Smithwicks.

If you don't care for something, the scent of it is very easily noticed.

I'm not a big fan of alcohol, so if someone's even had cough syrup that morning, I can smell it on their breath.

I used to hate Tequila. Then I tried a Patron margarita, and now I'm hooked. I also love Long Islands and Long Beaches, especially made with good stuff.

I once encountered a bartender who swore a Long Beach was a Long Island with White Zin instead of coke. No. Just No. That was awful, and all 6 of the people at my table agreed. Cranberry juice, not wine!

I will try anything (legal) once, but I have still not found any beer that I can stand to drink. I have also not acquired a taste for wine.

Curious. Are you from the US?

Born and raised, my dear. Most likely has to do with where I was born and raised - southern New Mexico. Most of the beer that is consumed in the whole state does tend to be Mexican beer.

And it's the same thing as wine preferences. I can't stand sweet wines, for me, the drier, the better. That's not to say there aren't any good ones, I just don't like them. Same as I prefer the beers and ales from Mexico and the UK.
