  • Strange encounter at the Card/Party outlet with BONUS management suck! **LONG**

I have been searching high and low for those stupid little plastic clip things that hold tablecloths securely to tables. A friend suggested the card and party outlet store. I had never been there, but decided to give it a shot.

I went in, asked a clerk if they had them and she was pleasant and polite, even leading me to them directly. I thanked her and proceeded to check out.

Now, check out has one person working, who also has to do the helium balloons AND check out purchases. There is one person at the register who is buying items and, of course, what looked to be 5 or 6 helium balloons. There are 5 people in line ahead of me, waiting. Some with carts full of stuff. *sigh* But hey, I really wanted these clips and have been looking all over, so I waited.

So, ONE person working. I counted 4 or 5 people around the store, stocking..none of whom jumped in to check out, despite a couple of them walking by and seeing the line.

**Please note - I'm not complaining about the stockers. I'm sure they were given a task to do stocking, or perhaps weren't trained on registers. The suck is not with them. Thank you. ***

    Back to the story.

The woman with the thousand helium balloons pays and leaves and the next person goes up. This woman decides she doesn't want an item or two and asks for them to be removed. Hey - I can't complain there, I've done the same thing. Unfortunately at THIS place, a manager apparently has to approve the voiding of any items.

    So she calls...

    ...and we wait

    She calls again....

    ...and we wait.

The customer asks if the cashier can ring the rest of this stuff while we wait? Answer? - No. Apparently once you attempt to void an item , it beeps for manager approval and you can't go any futher until one comes.

    A third call..

    ..no response.

At this point there is grumbling in the line. I was just rolling my eyes and shaking my head.

Another emp finally walks by and the poor cashier yelled 'help!'. She girl game over and the cashier said "No manager will come. I've called three times. I need to void these two items." She was visibly upset at this point and I dont blame her. I guess this girl was a team lead of some sort, because she was able to override the register and the cashier continued on with her scanning.

At this point, the second emp opens up the other register and calls people over. Here's where the weird comes in:

Guy in front of me has about 10 -15 boxes of those random cards that have about 10 cards in each box. Each box is about 6 x 4 x 2 inches high ~ basically big enough to hold 10 small cards and 10 corresponding envelopes.

The cashier begins ringing them up and he tells her to remove the cards from each box after they're rung. He doesnt want the boxes.

The cashier looks at him quizically and asks what he means. He repeats it. She asks what he wants to do with the boxes. Response? "Throw them away"

So the cashier scanned each one, had him pay, then proceeded to open each box, remove the cards and envelopes, toss the box to the side and bags the cards and envelopes.

Bottom line: What should have been a 60 second transaction stretched well into 3-4 minutes, all because of this weirdness.

When I got up there, I joked with the cashier, asking "what was up with THAT?". She just shook her head and rolled her eyes.

Total time in line, approximately 15-20 minutes.

Oh, and the manager NEVER DID answer the page. Assholes.

I feel sorry for those workers.

I ended up walking out of a drug store a couple weeks ago and left everything at the register because the manager was an idiot. I don't blame you feeling the way you did at all.

Oh, I think I'd have to make a phone call on this one.

There is no way it's acceptable for a manager to be paged three times and never show up.

Reading this story just pushed one of my buttons. I was an employee in a VERY similar situation about six or so years ago. My register needed a cash pickup before I could ring any more transactions.

Now, we couldn't just say "Pickup on one" or something direct like that. We had to use code numbers. I called for a code number at least FIVE freakin' times before my manager finally came (and by this point I was visibly pissed and close to muttering curse words, customers possibly hearing be damned). My manager got to the register and said "Uhh, what's a (pickup code number)".

        *headdesk*

This happened on more than one occasion too. The more I think about it, the happier I am that I'm out of there.

To play Devil's Advocate here, maybe the system was broken? The one in the backroom of my Aid of Rite needs to have a heavy band or strap over the phone to hold it in place on the hook, and if said band is not on, the phone goes off the hook and no one ever hears the phone or pages from the backroom. It's happened to me before, where I thought I was being shafted because no one would come when I called, but some genius didn't put the band back on and they never heard me.
