Let's hope that crow ate lots of habenaro peppers.
...and then shits all over their pickup

    Seriously though, WTF?
Why is it that some people who are "large," give other "large" (and I'm not trying to be a dick here) a hard time about their weight? As if *they* have any room to talk! If anyone says something like that to me... I can always reply with "I can always lose weight, whereas you'll always be a fucking bitch"

To play devils advocate, how do you know they were making fun of you?

Given your description, this is something that could have happened:

Father: Hey, maybe we should get your mom a bike like that! She needs the exercise
      Family: hahaha.
      Child: nah, she's too fat!
      Family: hahahaha.

Being overweight is bad enough, but being laughed at for trying to do something about it - just plain sucks. Public ridicule is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for people trying to lose weight. I set up a home gym in my garage so I can avoid people watching me.
Quoted for truth. Yeah, peer pressure is horrible. If you eat a hamburger, they scold you, if you eat a salad, they mock you. If you take the elevator, they call you lazy, if you take the stairs, they laugh at you. It's very discouraging.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Look at it this way Lupo, they may be laughing now, but they'll cry later when you're looking good and they still look like shit and have all sorts of obesity related ailments. They can stick these straws in their milkshakes and suck it!

What morons. Even if you are fat, at least you are exercising and doing something for the environment.

This story is precisely why I'm afraid to go out and exercise, be it walking or bike-riding.

I'm not wicked obese or anything, just fat. I'm a size 16, I'm about 50-60 lbs over what I should be. I want to lose weight and get in shape, but I'm terrified someone will make fun of me for being fat and exercising. :\

The last time I went for a run in public (two years ago, when I was in better shape), someone drove slowly past me and shouted, "BOOM, BOOM, SHE'S CAUSING AN EARTHQUAKE! FAT B****!"

I hope there's a special place in hell for the people who do this.

Aw, thanks for the support guys. I've been at this whole lifestyle change thing about 12 weeks, and have had my ups and downs. I've lost about 16 lbs and some inches off my hips and waist so I'm happy. It's just moments like that which make me rocket back to high school, you know?

MoxisPilot, wow, and I thought what I heard was disheartening! I'm much larger than you, and dream of being a size 16 as a short term goal!

I'm trying to suck it in and finally go to a gym I have free access to, but that whole not wanting to be seen in public thing is really really hard to overcome.

I do appreciate all the support here, though, and believe me, it's quite motivating, so thanks. Can't really figure out how to say more than that, though, and there's so much more to say, but thanks, as inadequate as it is the closest I can come.

16lbs in 12 weeks is awesome (and healthy - 1lb a week is the suggested loss to keep it off)! You're doing great.

                          Don't get disheartened.

Don't, you are at least doing something about it.
Anyway it's not that easy to see that someone is overweight when they sit on a bicycle. First, when you lean forward the belly isn't that visible. Two, look at a picture from Tour de France, see those beerbellies ? Those guys are not fat (doped probably but not fat!), they are just breathing properly from their stomach. If someone laugh, you should just pity them, they are too ignorant to even know how stupid they are.

I thought about you the other day, Lupo.

There was a woman on the track by the lake. She was NOT skinny. But she was walking, breaking a sweat, and making progress.

I thought - Go Lady, at least you are trying for exercise. And then thought Lupo's doing the same thing - trying!

So FOAD to all the laughers out there. Kiss My BUTT!

I really hope that no one discourages themselves from working out just because they are afraid of other people commenting. Don't let complete strangers (not to mention assholes) have that kind of power over you!!

When I was about nineteen years old, I went out for a walk one evening around my town. I wasn't overweight at all (though I had been throughout my childhood) and actually thought I looked damn good. Well as I was walking I passed a bus stop where these two girls, approximately my age, were standing. As I passed I heard one say to the other in a nasty voice, "I bet she thinks she looks so good in those jeans." For some reason that comment horrified the hell out of me, and stuck with me...even though I was a size 5, that was the catalyst that plunged me into a battle with serious bulimia for YEARS. It makes me so sad to think about that.

People who are cruel will have nasty things to say about ANYONE...as a fat kid, I got teased for being fat, but my skinny friends were teased just as equally for being skinny It's YOUR life and you should live it fearlessly, every moment.
