I hope the SC's at this signing weren't as bad as the ones a few years ago. I recall "conspiracy theory," and "punch in face" were involved.

The target of Buzz's swing was Bart Sibrel, for the record, and the occasion was an "ambush" interview that Aldrin was lured to through deception, not a book signing.

For those not familiar with the story, here's BBC coverage of the event.

There are always assholes at book signings. I have worked many of them. The worst were the little old ladies who had to come see Nicholas Sparks, and the members of a certain organization who, if I have interpreted her posts correctly, the OP actually works for. Those members are the biggest bitches ever, and every time there was a signing or event for that organization, everyone working that day just cried inside.

Argh, hearing about things like that frustrates me so much! Partly because a lot of our members really are cool women (like the 80 year old who, when a broken bone prevented her from skydiving on her birthday like she intended, went and got a tattoo instead), some of them are just old bats (though I'm fairly sure most of them were insufferable as middle agers, too). And also because...well, we suffer from theft of intellectual property a LOT. It's impossible, just looking at a group, to tell whether or not they're actually official members. SIIIIIIIGH.

I promise, we tell them over and over again to be polite...

It may have just been the particular chapter in the city where I used to live. It was a rather affluent place and a lot of the residents there were bitches, not just the members. Our marketing manager finally refused to work with the head of the chapter because she was so demanding and unreasonable.

My mom's friend's mom (got that?) is a member of another chapter and she is a lovely, wonderful woman, so I know not all of them are like that.

Not just meeting Buzz Aldrin, but meeting him during the 40th anniversary year of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Oh, and did I mention that my birthday is the anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch?

(if it makes you feel any better, I didn't keep the book he signed--I gave it to a friend for his birthday. Meeting Aldrin was more important for me than a signature in a book.)
              That is so awesome.

              So incredibly awesome.

He's one of the top five people I'd like to meet.

The Buzz Aldrin story is mentioned in this article about how some people think the moon landings were a hoax. I'm not one of them since I was working for NASA at Cape Kennedy when it happened.

It's funny, the effort required to fake the moon landings and convince the Soviets would have taken about as much effort as actually going to the moon itself would have. First of all, the Soviets confirmed the telemetry data, which means something was orbitting the moon. Second, with the number of people involved in launching, getting people there and what not, some of them would have talked. Third, the mythbusters took many of their arguments head on...that was a pretty good show.

Never underestimate the ability of a conspiracy theorist to ignore facts inconvenient to their fantasy world.

This is from a web page about the Flat Earth.

Samuel Shenton was the founder of The International Flat Earth Society. The society received quite a bit of publicity when Shenton was shown photos of the 'round' earth taken from space. At first he wasn't impressed, saying "It's easy to see how such a picture could fool the untrained eye." Later, some reports said he admitted that the Flat Earth Society might have to "reassess its position." But, after a brief period of uncertainty, he concluded that the space photos and the entire space program was faked by scientists desperately trying to save face by concealing the true nature of the shape of the earth.

In another instance, someone on a call-in radio show made up a story about being abducted by aliens. He expected to get a lot of calls telling him he was full of it. Instead, he got a lot of calls from people verifying what he said, even the stuff he made up while talking to them.
